The Rio Grande International Study Center recently toured Zacate Creek alongside Council Member Alyssa Cigarroa, Crane Engineering and the city of Laredo Parks Department as part of its new CompARTE Laredo initiative.
Attendees toured Zacate Creek on foot Wednesday, following the creek’s path to the Rio Grande while discussing plans for the initiative.
According to RGISC, CompARTE Laredo aims to promote environmental awareness and civic engagement in 11 neighborhoods along the Rio Grande and Zacate Creek through art, culture and storytelling.
A primary focus of the project is working with five neighborhoods along Zacate Creek to gather community feedback for the revitalization of a 2.6-mile stretch of the creek.
“This is a first-of-its-kind project that can change the trajectory of these inner-city neighborhoods by bringing life and vibrancy back to a long-neglected greenspace full of potential,” RGISC said.
The initial 19-month phase will bring together engineers and residents to develop an ecological, cultural and historical master plan for future implementation in the community.
CompARTE Laredo will focus on the neighborhoods of La Ladrillera, San Francisco Javier/El Tonto, El Cuatro/El Rincón del Diablo, Barrio Azteca, Chacon, Santo Niño, Sal Si Puedes, Las Cruces, Siete Viejo, El Trompe and La Guadalupe.
The two-year project is funded by The Mellon Foundation.
