DEL NORTE — Youth from all over the Valley have been coming to Del Norte this summer to participate in some really fun activities with the Del Norte Public Library. The library has been a staple in the community for over 100 years and has made their mark with fun and interactive programs in the last several years.
From adventure walks to story times and beyond, the library continues to make a sturdy home for children and their families all year round.
This summer was no different as the local library launched their summer reading program called Unearth a Story. Each week the library held events from dinosaur adoption day to a geological dig at the Rio Grande County Museum.
Over 50 youth gathered at the museum this last week bringing their summer enthusiasm and fun. Rio Grande County Museum board member and retired geologist Steve Nicolais led the group through the wonders of rocks and how the library helped him learn to love geology at a very young age.
“I went to the library and started learning all there was to know about rocks,” said Nicolais.
Students with High Valley Community Center and other community youth had a chance to dig for their very own rocks and keep their found treasures.
The program also included a museum tour by board member and retired archeologist Ken Frye who took the group through time all the way back to the early days of the Valley and taught them all there is to now about local indigenous rock art.
Frye also showed the students how to make their own rock art on pendants each child got to make and take home. “We have to protect these special places and in order to do that, we have to teach the younger generations how important they are,” said Frye.
The library has several more events planned for the remaining summer. For more information, please visit the Del Norte Public Library Facebook page.
