LA FERIA — Valley View started its District 32-4A title defense with an impressive win at La Feria Tuesday evening.

The Tigers shook off a slowish start to sweep the Lionettes 25-17, 25-8 and 25-17 in their first district game under first-year head coach Alejandro Vera.

“We were hitting,” Vera said. “The girls did not stop. They made some mistakes, but they continued on and we started hitting.”

The Tigers did not lose a district match at all last season, but struggled early in the first set ofntheir first night of district play. La Feria was able to grab an 11-7 lead, thanks to a 5-1 run. Valley View responded back with a run.

Tigers sophomore Rosa Trevino had a fantastic match. Trevino served for the Tigers as they went on a 11-0 run to go up 18-11 and they did not look back, in the set and in the match.

Tigers middle Yulieanna Prado was also pivotal in their first-set run. Prado had seven kills in the first set, five in the run. If it was not Prado, it was outside hitter Arianna Nava. She had three in the run and four in the set.

Trevino finished off the first set, started the second set with back-to-back aces and scored the final three points to win the second set in dominate fashion 25-8.

“It went well for us, I’m proud to be here with everyone and I liked the way we played,” Trevino said in Spanish.

She also said that she was proud of her serving Tuesday night and enjoys playing both offense and defense. The sophomore contributed all over the court for the Tigers.

The Tigers also had solid performances by Ariana Esqueda, Sofia Fernandez De Lara, Sasha Vera and Alondra Gonzalez.

The Lionettes had some positives. They were able to hang around for most of the third set. They just gave up a few too many free balls to the visitors. La Feria also had that strong start. La Feria hitters Myrhanda Trevino and Harley Alfaro had a couple of good hits that resulted in kills.

District 32-4A added Edcouch-Elsa, Zapata and Laredo Harmony, making it a trickier district for the defending champions.

“We are going to play some difficult teams,” Vera said. “It is going to be hard, but we are going to be ready for them. We are the defending champions and we are hungry.”

Valley View is currently 13-2 on the season with the only losses coming to Mission Veterans.

District 32-4A’s schedule is a little sporadic in the early part of the season with tournaments to be played on the weekend. Some teams started on Aug. 18th. The district will return to action next Tuesday.
