A 30-year-old Mission man was sentenced to prison Monday after getting black out drunk and striking his wife with an unknown object causing severe injuries to her face.
Miguel Mariscal III pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, according to a press release from Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios.
“This is a serious sentence for a serious offense,” Palacios said in his release. “Only a coward would do what Mariscal did to his wife. I hope others in our community learn from this case and understand that there are serious consequences for those who harm the people they should treat with love and respect.”
On Nov. 16, 2024, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigators responded to a residence in Mission after receiving a call for medical assistance.
Once there, the responding deputies found Mariscal’s wife unconscious with severe injuries to her face.
Medical personnel saw “apparent trauma” to the wife’s face and skull.
“A subsequent medical evaluation determined that she had suffered neurological injuries and strokes,” the release said.
Mariscal first told investigators that he and his wife had been drinking that evening before blacking out and woke up to find her lying on the bedroom floor.
However, Mariscal admitted to causing her serious bodily injury with an unknown object as part of his guilty plea.
