Could the Rio Grande Valley get some much needed relief from the heat in the coming days?
No.
The National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande office said that Valley residents can anticipate more triple-digit weather throughout the week.
“Basically, it’s still going to remain hot and dry — not much change to what we’ve been seeing,” NWS Lead Forecaster Amber McGinnis said. “Of course, temperatures, every day, look like for much of the Valley is going to reach at least 100-degrees at some point. Maybe some upper 90s a little bit closer to the coast, but it’s still going to be pretty hot up there.”
She said that there isn’t anything substantial in the forecast that could offset the seemingly unrelenting heat.
“Doesn’t look like there’s anything big in the forecast coming,” she said. “I would say the only potential relief would be if there was a brief sea breeze shower or thunderstorm. But at this point, even that chance is extremely low.”
With the climate phenomenon El Nino expected to be historically powerful this year, many weather forecasters are anticipating hotter-than-normal weather for much of the United States as a result.
McGinnis said that it may already be affecting weather patterns in the area.
“Yes and no. Really, the main driver right now is high pressure over the south and southwestern U.S.,” she said. “It’s just remaining in place, and so that contributes to the suppression of any kind of precipitation, and it allows an increase in temperatures.”

As for the next few days, McGinnis offered some advice as Rio Grande Valley residents navigate the heat.
“I mean, really, the main thing is just it’s going to continue to be hot and dry,” she said. “Stay safe outside. Make sure if you have to be outdoors that you’re taking plenty of breaks and staying hydrated. Never leave your children in a vehicle, or pets for that matter. Really, just do your best to stay cool.”
