A 38-year-old McAllen man was sentenced to life in prison without parole in the case of a 2017 murder that occurred during a botched robbery of cash and methamphetamine.
A Hidalgo County jury found Armando Adrian Arebalo guilty of capital murder after 41-year-old Nicholas Anthony Bazan was shot and killed in McAllen on June 19, 2017, according to a news release from Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios.
This comes three years after Arebalo’s co-defendant, 30-year-old Alex Arevalo, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
The remaining suspects include 58-year-old Avero Olivarez Alaniz, 42-year-old Roberta Martinez and 43-year-old Monica Ann Winkle Gomez.
All three are also facing capital murder charges and have pleaded not guilty.
At around 12:42 a.m. on June 19, 2017, McAllen police received calls regarding gunshots fired in the 2100 block of North Main Street, according to the probable cause affidavit.
During one of those calls, a homeowner in the 1400 block of West Vine Avenue told police he heard an unknown man calling for help from his backyard.
Once police arrived, they found Bazan dead with a single gunshot wound and his front pockets turned inside out.
Surveillance footage from the area showed “a light colored van traveling south at the 2100 block of N. Main Street” that “suddenly (slowed) down” when Bazan is seen exiting and running away from the vehicle.
Over the course of the investigation, police learned that Bazan was with Arevalo and Alaniz at the Orcarch Lounge in McAllen a couple of days prior to his murder.
Bazan’s brother told police that Bazan had “a large ‘wad’ of cash on him” the day before his death.
During a police interview, Arevalo admitted to shooting Bazan inside a van and confirmed Martinez, who is his cousin, Arebalo, who is Martinez’s boyfriend, Alaniz and Gomez were inside the van at the time.
Authorities later learned Arebalo is also known as a “Loco 13” gang member and was released on bond for state capital murder charges but was arrested in 2018 after he allegedly sold two pounds of methamphetamine to an undercover FBI informant to pay his lawyer, according to the affidavit.
Arebalo had told the informant that if he didn’t get enough money to pay, he would flee in order to avoid that pending charge, according to the federal criminal complaint.
Alaniz has been in jail since Aug. 10, 2017, on a $1 million bond while Martinez and Gomez have been in and out of jail since.
Martinez had been out on bond since July 21 while Gomez has been out of jail since Dec. 8, 2023.
Alaniz and Gomez have upcoming pre-trial hearings this month while Martinez’s next hearing will be held late August, according to court records.
