In 2024, the Chronicle thoroughly covered the sad murder of Jocelyn Nungaray by undocumented men who had entered the U.S. illegally. The Republican Party and the rest of the media expended an enormous amount of energy publicizing her tragic death as a reason to stop illegal immigration.
The belief that additional stories of such ghastly events are going unreported is preposterous. What evidence can these letter-writers cite of similar tragic offenses going unreported? Has Fox News, Breitbart, the Washington Times or morning talk radio been covering heinous crimes that go unmentioned in our local newspaper?
Regarding “Houston child costs rise as annual total tops $22.6K,” (July 14): We often debate why the modern middle class is vanishing, but the answer is clear when comparing generations. In 1957, my father supported five children on a single paycheck from a small Texas auto dealership. He purchased a wonderful home, provided a stable upbringing and fully funded two-week family vacations annually.
Today, that stable baseline is completely out of reach. As George Carlin perfectly observed, “There’s a club, and you ain’t in it.”
Corporate greed isn’t a glitch in this machine; it is a permanent feature. It is never going away. Instead of fighting an unchangeable reality, our financial system needs to embrace it and channel it so that everyone actually benefits. It is time to structurally align corporate self-interest with public prosperity and build a system that is genuinely equitable for working people.
Regarding “Complaints about faded Houston road lanes doubled. Who’s fixing them?” (Aug. 8): While there is no question that many of Houston’s street lanes are difficult to see due to faded paint, the glare mentioned is a huge part of the problem. On the rare occasion I am on a stretch of road without high glare private lighting or TxDOT’s white LED freeway lighting, even faded markings are visible.
I am in Spain right now, and I’m seeing sane nighttime lighting, warm and shielded. Visibility is infinitely better than in Houston.
It could take months or years to brighten Houston’s roadway markings. Turning off an unnecessary high-glare light while leaving the under-eave lighting takes a few seconds. It is a shame when the fix is low or even negative cost.
