Portions of the Rio Grande Valley are at risk of experiencing strong winds, thunderstorms and hail as a weather system moves into the region from Mexico.
“From the Storm Prediction Center, it’s looking like we’re gonna see isolated severe thunderstorms today,” Brian Miller, a meteorologist with the NWS-Brownsville, told mySA on Wednesday.
The bad weather will come in waves as “a couple of disturbances” are expected to track into the Valley from the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico, Miller said.
The first disturbance is expected to arrive between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday, but the potential for more severe weather will arrive with the second wave.
The storms will move across the region on a northwesterly track, crossing the Rio Grande and largely affecting the border counties before heading into the ranchlands, Miller said.
“Anywhere (in) Zapata, Starr and Hidalgo counties may see some activity earlier, and then if the storms can hold together, they would push into the brush country, including Jim Hogg and Brooks counties after that,” he said.
Narrow storm bands will produce isolated pockets of strong thunderstorms, wind gusts of between 60 and 70 mph and the potential for hail.
“The main threats are gonna be hail — maybe around up to an inch in size — that’s the threshold for ‘severe (weather),’” Miller said.
Any areas that are struck by multiple rain bands will also have the potential to experience flash flooding exacerbated by moderate to severe drought conditions that have led to excessively low soil moisture throughout the Valley.
Drivers along the Interstate 69C/U.S. 281 corridor will need to stay weather aware, but little impact is expected to be felt along the I-69E/U.S. 77 corridor in Cameron and Willacy counties.
The rains will continue through Thursday before the weather system peters out by lunchtime Friday, Miller said.
