A 32-year-old Mission woman was sentenced to prison last Thursday following a guilty plea in a 2019 murder case, court records indicate.

Edna Rivera Cantu was convicted on one count of aggravated kidnapping and has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with nearly four years credit.

Rivera is the last of three people who have been convicted for the murder of Fernando Garza Jr. which occurred on July 24, 2019.

Alfredo Huerta, 23, also entered a guilty plea for murder last year in October along with 29-year-old Julio Cesar Deleon who pleaded in February.

Huerta was sentenced to 40 years in jail while Deleon received a 46-year sentence.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe that Deleon and Huerta kidnapped Garza and another man, and took them to an orchard in Mission where Garza was shot in the face.

The investigators alleged that Rivera knew Garza had been killed and assisted in the kidnapping.

The affidavit alleges that Rivera was the one who tied Garza and Luis Domingo Dominguez by the wrists at her 8606 Marviel Ortiz St. home.

“Edna knew what was going to happen and is the one who bound their wrists together with tape,” the affidavit stated. “(Deleon) and (Huerta) took them to an orchard where (Deleon) shot and killed Fernando.”

Dominguez survived the encounter as Huerta and Deleon took him to a separate location where the vehicle used was left behind, according to the affidavit.

Rivera was facing two counts of possession and one count of aggravated kidnapping to which she pleaded guilty last week while the possession charges were dismissed.
