Lidia Herrera, a Los Angeles native, announced she has joined the Valley’s ABC affiliate in a post on Facebook.
“A new chapter in my career began today!” Herrera said on Monday, September 14. “I joined the KRGV 5 News team as a reporter. Excited to tell stories in the RGV community. Get ready 956!”
Herrera was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Houston, where she graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in communications and Spanish. According to her LinkedIn, she got her start in television news as a digital content producer for KYTX CBS 19 in Tyler. From 2024 through May 2026, Herrera worked as a “multi-skilled journalist” at KIII 3NEWS, the ABC affiliate in Corpus Christi. Her last day at the Coastal Bend station was May 29.
On Tuesday, Herrera told MySA she’s excited to begin working in the Valley in large part because of the strong sense of community that the 956 is known for.
“That really stood out to me because, as a reporter, I want to do more than tell stories—I want to be part of the community I’m serving and get involved,” Herrera said.
Another five-year veteran, Sandra Rodriguez, marked her last day in May. The Pennsylvania native had spent five years co-anchoring KRGV’s three-hour weekday morning show, Channel 5 News This Morning. Morning meteorologist Cecilia Gutierrez quietly left the morning show in early April, making no formal announcement at the time of her departure after nearly a decade at KRGV. And finally, weekend sports anchor and sideline reporter Gloria Morelia is set to leave the sports desk in December once football season concludes.
In June, KRGV announced the hiring of Kennesaw, Georgia native Jay Martin, who now serves as a meteorologist during the station’s daytime newscasts. Now, Herrera has also joined KRGV’s stable of field reporters, whom she’s eager to learn from.
“The KRGV news team has so many talented professionals I can learn from and continue growing alongside,” Herrera said.
