Prairie View A&M University Extension Services: Empowering Communities in Texas

Introduction to Prairie View A&M University Extension

Prairie View A&M University, much like its counterpart Texas A&M, boasts a significant extension service aimed at enhancing local communities. The Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension Program, established in 1914, serves as a vital resource, partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide research-based knowledge and support across Texas.

The Role of Prairie View A&M Extension

Community Engagement and Economic Development

The Prairie View A&M Extension Program focuses on delivering essential information and training tailored to small farm producers, families, aspiring entrepreneurs, and youth. Currently operating in 66 Texas counties, the program is expected to expand further, adding more agents and reaching more communities over time.

Megan Rodriguez, the community and economic development agent, emphasizes the significance of their outreach. “We target diverse audiences with tailored programs. Our primary goal is to enhance entrepreneurship opportunities through small business training and consulting,” she notes.

Empowering Entrepreneurship

The economic development unit of Prairie View A&M Extension is particularly focused on fostering entrepreneurship. Their staff collaborates with individuals, local communities, and organizations to provide education on home ownership and financial literacy. This commitment to economic development is reflected in their programs aimed at cultivating rural prosperity, driving technical innovation, and improving the quality of life for residents.

Recent Collaborations

Recently, Rodriguez, along with her colleague Rina Castillo, delivered valuable insights during a meeting of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council’s Small Cities Coalition. Both agents highlighted the essential services offered by the Prairie View A&M Extension in the Rio Grande Valley, addressing various community and economic development goals.

“I want to thank the Small Cities Coalition for the warm welcome we received,” Castillo shared. “It was an honor to demonstrate how our services can support the progress of the Rio Grande Valley.”
