Maryland Weather Update: High Wind Warnings and Cold Temperatures Ahead

High Wind Warnings for Maryland

As strong winds continue to affect the region, Maryland is under a WJZ First Alert Weather Day tonight through Tuesday. Current weather conditions are calm for the most part, but with a significant chill, residents are advised to prepare for the gusty winds that may lead to potential hazards.

Gusty Winds Set to Sweep Across Maryland

A High Wind Warning is active for regions such as Garrett and Allegany Counties until Tuesday afternoon. Wind gusts in these areas could exceed 70 MPH at mountain summits, and reach 60 MPH in lower elevations. A Wind Advisory is also in effect for the rest of Maryland through Tuesday, with the strongest gusts leading to possible tree damage and scattered power outages.

Residents can expect gusty winds to persist into Tuesday, starting with morning temperatures around the 20s. Wind chill could make the temperature feel like it’s in the single digits or teens in various neighborhoods. Early morning gusts are predicted to hit 40 to 45 MPH, though these winds are expected to gradually subside throughout the day, tapering off to around 20 MPH by the afternoon.

Tuesday’s Temperatures and Wind Chill

Despite colder conditions, high temperatures on Tuesday are forecasted to reach the low to mid-30s across most areas. However, with the persistent winds, it will feel like the low to mid-20s at the peak of the day. Unlike Monday, when temperatures fell through the afternoon hours, Tuesday will see a temperature climb, providing some relief from the frigid weather.

Power Outages Across the Region

The powerful winds have already caused widespread power outages, particularly affecting thousands of customers on Monday as downed trees and branches interrupted electrical service. As reported by BGE, over 14,500 customers had their power restored by 9 p.m. on Monday, while around 10,000 residents remained without power. The worst-hit areas include Howard, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel counties.

Further outages are anticipated into Tuesday, according to a BGE spokesperson. To stay updated on outage information in your area, visit BGE’s outage map.

New Year’s Eve Weather Forecast

As we approach New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, expect a continuation of breezy conditions, although not as severe as the previous days. If you’re heading out to celebrate the arrival of 2026, temperatures around midnight in Baltimore will hover in the lower 30s, feeling closer to the 20s due to wind chill. Fortunately, weather conditions should cooperate for outdoor festivities, featuring partly cloudy skies and dry weather.

A Cold Start to the New Year

As 2026 begins, another significant drop in temperatures is anticipated. Thursday will see continued breeziness with temperatures struggling to reach the freezing mark. There is a possibility of light snow showers, but most neighborhoods are not expected to accumulate significant snowfall. A persistently cold weather pattern is projected to continue through the initial days of the new year.

Conclusion

Marylanders should remain vigilant and prepared for strong winds and colder temperatures over the upcoming days. With potential power outages and chilly conditions, it’s essential to stay updated with reliable sources. For more weather updates and alerts, be sure to check local news stations and weather websites as this dynamic weather situation unfolds.
