Why Engaging in Politics is Crucial: The Impact of Immigration Policies on Communities

Understanding the Importance of Political Engagement

In today’s world, it’s common to hear people say, "I don’t do politics." However, the reality is that politics is pervasive and affects nearly every aspect of our lives, from our safety to our rights and freedoms. Choosing to disengage from political conversations is not an exercise of freedom; rather, it is a form of surrender to the status quo.

Recent Developments in Immigration Policy

Recent events have brought this issue to the forefront. Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in places like Los Angeles reveal the immediate consequences of political decisions. Additionally, the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and Marines has turned neighborhoods into zones of fear rather than safe communities.

The Personal Toll of Immigration Raids

Growing up near the U.S.-Mexico border, immigration wasn’t just a news headline; it was a lived reality. Many individuals I knew were part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, while others faced daily challenges such as driving under the constant fear of deportation. Witnessing friends being detained simply for trying to build a better life is a painful reminder of the harsh realities that many communities face due to flawed immigration policies.

The Power Dynamics of Immigration Policies

When the government decides who can stay and who must leave, it sets a dangerous precedent. Immigration policy serves as a litmus test for power; if the State can strip someone of their right to reside, they can threaten other freedoms as well. Now is not the time to remain on the sidelines. By choosing to ignore these matters, you are allowing those around you to live in fear.

The Broader Implications of Immigration Enforcement

The issues in Los Angeles—troops, raids, and fear—are not isolated incidents; they are symptomatic of a larger systemic problem. Reports indicate the use of wartime powers to detain and transfer immigrants without due process, raising alarms about civil liberties erosion.

In regions like the Rio Grande Valley, where nearly 20% of the population consists of immigrants, the threat posed by adversarial immigration policies is both real and immediate. Many live in constant anxiety, aware that at any moment, their lives could be irreversibly altered.

Community Vulnerability and Societal Impact

When immigrants become targets, the effects ripple through the community. It becomes easier to suppress dissent, marginalize marginalized groups, and neglect fundamental rights like healthcare and housing. The consequences extend beyond immigrant families; they affect everyone.

The mindset of “it doesn’t affect me” is shortsighted. History has shown that once exceptions for certain groups are made, it is only a matter of time before those exceptions expand, encroaching on the rights of others.

Recognizing the Consequences of Inaction

The reality is stark: if the authorities can detain children, what atrocities may follow when the public is unaware? This is not mere alarmism; the consequences of inaction have been visible. Families have been torn apart in schools, hospitals, and airports—this is not just cruel but perilously dangerous for our society as a whole.

Taking Action: The Importance of Protest

However, this isn’t a moment for despair. Protests are happening across the country to demand an end to these raids and the associated climate of fear. This is an opportunity for those who have felt powerless in front of their screens to make a tangible impact.

Your Role in Change

Your voice and presence matter in the fight for justice, especially against unjust immigration practices. Silence has its consequences; engaging in these issues can lead to meaningful change.

Solidarity Across Communities

While we may not share the same immigration status, we all have a stake in this battle for dignity and rights. No one should have to live in fear, and none of us are truly free if some members of our society are hunted.

The Call to Action

Now is the time to advocate and assert that "I do politics because this affects my life.” From engaging in discussions to participating in activism, every action counts in this fight for human rights.

By participating in the political discourse surrounding immigration, we not only stand for those directly affected, but we also safeguard our own freedoms. The future is unwritten, and involvement is essential for shaping a just society.
