Four Hidalgo County cities — McAllen, Pharr, Mission and Edinburg — landed on Investopedia’s list of the “Best 100 U.S. Cities for Retirees in 2026,” helping Texas claim more spots on the ranking than every state except Florida. Fourteen Texas cities made the top 100 list, while Florida had 21.

The financial education website analyzed more than 500 U.S. cities using factors like affordability, healthcare access, entertainment options and climate. The Valley cities stood out largely because of it’s low cost of living, something Investopedia says consistently makes the region one of the cheapest places in the country.

“Cities like Edinburg, McAllen, and Pharr, in the Rio Grande Valley, are consistently among the lowest-cost markets in the country,” Investopedia staffer Ali Hussain said.

Part of what set so many Texas cities apart is the state’s lack of a state income tax, which means Social Security benefits and retirement account withdrawals aren’t taxed. 

“Affordability carries by far the most weight in our 2026 Best U.S. Cities for Retirees rankings, at 53%, because it has a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of retirees,” Investopedia staffers said.

Cities like Mission, with its population of about 88,000, offer “a relaxed pace of life,” according to another Investopedia writer, Katharine Paljug.

And Mission — along with Pharr and Edinburg — borders McAllen. The Valley’s second-largest city is home to the McAllen International Airport, the McAllen Performing Arts Center, and a number of museums, public parks and wildlife spaces, which fits the arts and entertainment bill. But if that’s not enough, all four Valley cities are an easy day trip to Mexico.

“Pharr’s location also makes it a regional gateway, with the Pharr International Bridge facilitating cross-border commerce and making the city a logistical hub,” Hussain said.
