Another warm, quiet stretch of December weather is in place across Texas, but the pattern won’t stay calm forever. A new cold front is set to arrive this weekend, bringing cooler temperatures back to the northern half of the state. Until then, expect mild afternoons, chilly mornings, and patchy fog in some regions.

Dry and Mild Through Friday

Weather remains uneventful today and Thursday across the state, with light winds, low humidity, and near-clear skies. Afternoon temperatures will rise well above seasonal averages, especially across West, Central, and South Texas.

Patchy fog will be possible late tonight and again Friday morning across South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and portions of Southeast Texas. Some dense fog pockets may briefly impact early-morning travel but should dissipate by mid-morning.

Fire danger remains moderate across the western half of Texas today thanks to warm temperatures and dry air. That said, conditions are not expected to reach critical thresholds.

Upper-Level Pattern: Calm Before the Change

A northwesterly flow aloft will dominate the next few days, keeping major storm systems away from Texas. However, this same setup will help push a stronger cold front southward this weekend.

Until that arrives, warm and dry conditions hold firm across most of the state. Overnight temperatures won’t be quite as cold as earlier this week, and no major precipitation chances are expected through Friday.

Weekend Cold Front Arrives

Saturday and Sunday bring our next real change in the forecast. A cold front will sweep across Texas, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures for the Panhandle, North Texas, Northeast Texas, and the Texoma region.

While this front does not look especially stormy, a few light showers may accompany it across East and Southeast Texas. At this time, rainfall totals appear low and scattered.

High Temperatures Snapshot

Here’s a look at forecast highs through the end of the week:

Wednesday

Thursday

  • 70s Panhandle and West Texas

  • 60s–70s North & Central Texas

  • 70s South Texas

  • Upper 70s to 80s Rio Grande Valley

Friday

Saturday & Sunday

  • Cold front pushes south

  • 40s–50s Panhandle, Texoma, Northeast Texas

  • 50s–60s Central Texas

  • 70s–80s South Texas ahead of the front

Looking Ahead

Long-range guidance from the Climate Prediction Center keeps Texas on the warm side through mid-December, with temperatures favored to be above average for much of the state. Precipitation chances begin to increase next week across the eastern half of Texas as the southern branch of the jet stream reactivates.

For now, enjoy the warm stretch while it lasts — because December in Texas always has another twist ready.
