Two men from Uzbekistan were arrested in Brooks County after fleeing from Border Patrol at the Falfurrias checkpoint leading authorities on a vehicle chase exceeding speeds of 100 mph.
Erkin Khudoyberdiev is charged with transporting a person illegally present in the United States, namely, his passenger, Ikhtivor Rakhimov, who illegally crossed the Rio Grande and was transported from McAllen, according to a criminal complaint.
On Saturday, a Chevrolet Malibu entered the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Falfurrias through the primary lane.
One agent confirmed Khudoyberdiev to be a legal permanent resident, but when they turned their attention to Rakhimov, he simply stated “green card.”
When the agent asked for the card, Rakhimov said it was at home, so they were referred to the secondary inspection to verify Rakhimov’s immigration status.
However, the two men didn’t stop and continued driving through the checkpoint despite agents attempting to stop them.
Agents later observed the Malibu north of the Brooks County rest area and approached in marked units with their lights and sirens on in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
As the Malibu continued north, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were called to assist in the high-speed chase.
“After reaching speeds of over 100 mph and an unsuccessful attempt to use a vehicle immobilization device, the vehicle was blocked by DPS troopers and stopped at the intersection of Highway 281 and Highway 285,” the complaint said.
When the vehicle finally came to a stop, Rakhimov attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by agents.
It was then discovered that Rakhimov was illegally present in the country.
In an interview with authorities, Rakhimov said he left Uzbekistan on Aug. 7 and crossed the Rio Grande on Sept. 2 before arriving at McAllen.
Rakhimov stated that a friend from his home country arranged for him to be smuggled to Philadelphia.
He added that a Hispanic man picked him up from the river and drove him directly to a hotel.
Rakhimov said that Khudoyberdiev was his friend from back home and knew he was living in Philadelphia. Khudoyberdiev agreed to pick Rakhimov at the hotel.
According to Rakimov, his friend paid Khudoyberdiev $350 for gas and that they drove straight to the Falfurrias checkpoint once he was picked up the same day of his arrest.
Once at the checkpoint, Rakimov stated that he told Khudoyberdiev to keep driving because he was in the country illegally, adding that he ran following the vehicle pursuit because he felt scared of the outcome of the situation.
