One of South Texas’ most recognizable sports anchors is bidding adieu to the 956.
Blake Holland, an award-winning sports journalist who has served as an anchor and reporter for the Rio Grande Valley’s NBC affiliate, KVEO, has signed off the Valley’s airwaves after four years. Holland announced his departure in a post on Facebook over the weekend.
“After an incredible four years at KVEO, yesterday was my final day,” Holland said in the May 30 Facebook post.
“In 2022, this Midwestern kid left home with a dream of becoming the best sports journalist he could be. He never could’ve imagined the impact the Rio Grande Valley would have on his life,” the post reads.
KVEO NBC23 and its sister station, CBS4, are jointly owned and operated by Nexstar Media Group out of a Harlingen television studio under the name ValleyCentral. Holland came to the Valley in 2022 after graduating with honors with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, according to a station biography. The St. Louis, Missouri native previously worked in the sports department at KOMU 8, an NBC affiliate in Columbia, Missouri.
Holland told MySA that he had never heard of the Valley prior to accepting the KVEO job in May 2022 but is grateful for the impactful moments he’s had an opportunity to report on, including the first local high school team to make it to the state softball championship and the inaugural season of Division I college football in the Valley.
“I’m beyond grateful and incredibly proud of the work we’ve done at KVEO,” Holland said. “I’m leaving with lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories and a greater appreciation for the role local sports play in bringing communities together.”
Holland added that leaving the Valley is “bittersweet,” but he’s “excited for what’s next.”
While in the Valley, Holland earned two awards from the Texas Association of Broadcasters. In 2025, Holland was among a team of KVEO sports staff who earned a Texas Broadcasting News Award for a half-hour-long special called “Beyond the Sidelines” that focused on the Valley’s high school football scene ahead of the 2024 season. And earlier this year, Holland was named sports reporter of the year in the sports reporter TV medium category of the Texas Broadcasting News Awards.
In addition to sitting on the weekend sports anchor desk and being out on the field for sideline reporting, Holland also hosted a weekly, half-hour-long show called “Vaqueros Nation” dedicated to covering all the athletics news from the Valley’s Division 1 school, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
