If you’re looking to spend your golden years in a place that’s both warm and affordable, then look no further than the Rio Grande Valley, where U.S. News & World Report has ranked several cities as among the best places in the United States to retire.
Over in Cameron County, Harlingen — the city that considers itself to be the “capital of the Valley” — ranked highest at No. 4. Laredo came in at No. 8. However, U.S. News specifically didn’t analyze smaller communities, even those that are popular among retirees, so you won’t find cities like South Padre Island in the ranking.
U.S. News analyzed data from private and government sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau, as well as input from a March 2025 consumer survey, to determine its rankings. The digital media company then calculated weighted scores for each city across six metrics, or “indexes,” including quality of life, value, healthcare quality, senior population and migration, taxes, and job market.
Among the quality of life and value indexes, U.S. News looked at how each city fared when it comes to crime rates, weather, housing affordability and cost of living. All six Valley cities enjoy low crime rates and year-round temperate weather. Finding a place to live is also an affordable proposition. Median rents range from $695 in Harlingen and Brownsville to $834 in McAllen. Meanwhile, median home values range from $137,982 in Pharr to $191,706 in McAllen, while the median household income ranges from $51,636 in Brownsville to $63,734 in Mission.
