“Life news! In a couple of weeks, I’ll be wrapping up my time at ValleyCentral,” Mireles said in posts on Facebook and Instagram on Friday, July 24. “I came to ValleyCentral to help build the ValleyCentral+ app and the station’s local streaming shows. Now that they’re in a great place and ready for an outstanding team to take them even further, I’ve decided it’s time for my next chapter.”

Mireles joined ValleyCentral last fall to help the Nexstar Media Group-owned “dual branded” station — which jointly operates the Valley’s CBS and NBC affiliates — launch a new type of hybrid programming. The station’s 4 p.m. newscast is broadcast simultaneously over the air and via a “connected TV” app called ValleyCentral+, which is available on Apple TV+, Amazon Fire and Hulu. Mireles co-hosts the interactive newscast with Alejandra Yañez from a roundtable-type news desk that serves as the nexus of ValleyCentral’s Harlingen newsroom.

“I’m grateful to Brad for trusting me with this project,” Mireles said on LinkedIn, referring to ValleyCentral News Director Brad Ginsberg, who selected him to launch the ValleyCentral+ brand. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see it become a reality, and with that foundation now in place, I’ve decided it’s time for my next chapter.”

Mireles’ announcement comes just days after fellow veteran anchor, Derick Garcia, announced he was leaving after a decade at ValleyCentral, where he served the station’s lead investigative journalist, food reporter, and 5, 6 and 10 p.m. anchor. But Mireles’ pending departure isn’t the first time he’s said farewell to television news.

In October 2024, the anchor known for breaking down complex issues into more digestible news stories with the help of data visualizations stepped down from the Valley’s highest-rated news station, KRGV Channel 5 News. Mireles had worked for the ABC affiliate for nearly five years, working his way up from field reporter and weekend anchor to anchoring its weekday primetime 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.

Mireles’ commitment to data science in local journalism has earned him numerous accolades, including a Lone Star Emmy for best anchor for his coverage of a rare Valley tornado, SpaceX and immigration, and a Texas Association of Broadcasters award for best reporter for his coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to beginning his journalism career, Mireles served in the U.S. Air Force and the District of Columbia Air National Guard for a decade, including eight years on active duty. Mireles is married to Dr. Rachel Gelman, an ophthalmologist and daughter of the late Dr. Lawrence Richard Gelman, who helped found the Valley’s physician-owned hospital system, DHR Health. The couple has two children.
