BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Democratic Party nominee for governor of Texas, Gina Hinojosa, is more favorable than Gov. Greg Abbott in Congressional District 15, according to a new opinion poll.
The House Majority PAC poll gives Hinojosa a 52 percent to 47 percent lead over he general election opponent. President Trump won the district by 15 points in 2024.
Hinojosa, a Rio Grande Valley native, said the poll findings show a powerful trend among Latino voters supporting her campaign. She noted that a Fox News poll showed her trailing Abbott by just one point across the whole state. That is within the margin of error.
“Our campaign is getting stronger by the day because my plan is simple: save public schools and put money in your pocket by ending the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax,” Hinojosa told the Rio Grande Guardian. “For 12 years, working Texans have suffered from Abbott’s record of putting his billionaire donors before working Texans: $1 billion drained from public schools, skyrocketing costs, and data centers siphoning our resources after getting the most generous tax dollar giveaway in the country. As I travel the state, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats are taking a stand to rebuild the American Dream in Texas with an economy that works for the people, not the billionaires.”
Hinojosa was in Laredo recently to unveil her economic platform. The plan includes issuing all Texas households “$1,500 Corruption Tax Refund” checks to provide relief for working families and “account for the cost of Greg Abbott’s corruption.”
Hinojosa said: “Texans have lost trust in our government, and for good reason – Greg Abbott has hoarded our money while we struggle with the costs of healthcare, groceries, gas, and housing. This proposal is about restoring that trust by putting money back in people’s pockets, especially at a time when Texans are hurting. The government is more of a burden than a help to people – that changes when I’m governor. We can come together in a bipartisan way to do this for Texans.”
Abbott, along with Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives, point out that Texas is the eighth largest economy in the world. They note it has grown by $2.7 trillion and added 2.5 million jobs.
State Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, said: “Texas continues to lead the nation because Republicans have prioritized economic growth, job creation, and meaningful tax relief for hardworking families. We will keep working alongside Governor Abbott to strengthen our economy, provide additional property tax relief, and ensure Texas remains the best place to live, work, and raise a family. That’s the leadership Texans can count on.”
State Rep. J.M. Lozano, R-Kingsville, said: “Corpus Christi was built by hardworking Texans in the energy industry, not by political slogans. Democrats cannot claim to support this community while advancing policies that would drive up energy costs and threaten the industries that power South Texas. Republicans will continue standing with the workers and businesses that keep our economy strong.”
Congressional District 15 includes parts of Hidalgo and Aransas counties, alongside the full counties of Bee, Brooks, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jim Wells, and Lavaca, plus portions of Regugio and San Patricio counties.
