July is here, but Texas is not shutting down storm chances just yet.

After a stormy Sunday that produced wind damage across parts of Northwest Texas, the Big Country, the Concho Valley, the Permian Basin, and western North Texas, more storms are possible today. The main severe storm risk has shifted east into Northeast Texas and the ArkLaTex.

Northeast Texas and ArkLaTex Storm Risk Today

The Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk for parts of Northeast Texas and the ArkLaTex.

That includes areas near:

  • Texarkana
  • Atlanta
  • New Boston
  • Clarksville
  • Tyler
  • Areas north of Lufkin
  • Upper Toledo Bend region

Storms may develop this afternoon and slowly move southeast. Most activity should decrease after sunset, but a few storms may continue into the late evening.

Severe storm outlook for Texas showing a Level 2 slight risk in far Northeast Texas and a Level 1 marginal risk across parts of North and East Texas.
Today’s severe storm outlook shows the highest risk in far Northeast Texas, with isolated to scattered strong storms possible nearby.

Main Storm Threats

The strongest storms today may produce:

  • Localized damaging wind gusts over 60 to 70 mph
  • Dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning
  • Heavy rain
  • Localized flooding
  • Some hail

A few storms may also develop across North Texas, the Hill Country, Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, and East Texas during the afternoon.

A couple of storms are also possible in the Big Bend, Davis Mountains, and Guadalupe Mountains.

More Storms Tuesday

Tuesday looks similar, with another round of afternoon storms possible across North Texas, Northeast Texas, and eastern Texas.

The main concerns Tuesday will again be localized damaging winds, heavy rain, lightning, and perhaps some hail. Most storms should weaken after sunset.

Heat Builds Later This Week

We should get a couple of less active days later this week, but the tradeoff is more heat.

Highs today will mostly be in the 90s, with a few triple digits in the Borderland, Big Bend, Rio Grande Plains, and a few other hotter spots.

By midweek, triple digits return to more of Texas, including parts of the Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, the Big Country, Concho Valley, North Texas, the Borderland, Big Bend, Rio Grande Plains, Rio Grande Valley, and parts of the I-35 corridor.

It is July, so yes, it is hot. The good news is that this still does not look like one of those truly miserable “summer of H-E-double-hockey-sticks” setups. At least not yet.

Weekend Rain Chances

Rain chances may try to increase again this weekend into early next week as moisture returns and the pattern becomes a little more unsettled.

This would likely be more of a pop-up summer storm pattern. Some folks could get a quick heavy downpour, while others nearby get nothing.

That is summer in Texas.

Bottom Line

More storms are possible today and Tuesday.

The main severe storm risk today is across Northeast Texas and the ArkLaTex, where a few storms may produce damaging winds, heavy rain, lightning, and some hail.

Storms may also pop up in other parts of North Texas, Central Texas, Southeast Texas, East Texas, and the Big Bend region.

Keep an eye on the sky this afternoon and evening. If thunder roars, get your keister indoors.
