Authorities arrested a U.S. man for attempting to smuggle over 120 pounds of cocaine into the country from Mexico in 2023.
Andres Alejandro Ramos, born in 1994, was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, specifically 121 pounds of cocaine.
At about 5:02 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2023, agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Mobile Response Team, Special Operations Detachment, Texas Department of Public Safety Rangers, DPS SWAT and Texas Game Wardens all conducted a narcotics operation near Midway Road in Rio Grande City, according to the criminal complaint.
They observed suspected scouts operating near the Rio Grande when they saw a white 2001 Ford Ranger near the riverbank where a raft carrying several people had crossed into the U.S.
Shortly after, the Ranger left the area at a high rate of speed heading northbound from the river road.
Agents advised mobile units to intercept the Ranger as they suspected it was loaded with narcotics.
Those agents used tire deflation devices and successfully deflated the Ranger’s tires.
They approached the vehicle but the driver turned around and drove back toward the river in an attempt to avoid arrest.
A Border Patrol agent positioned themselves along the river road to intercept the Ranger, but the driver abandoned the vehicle near the river and swam across to Mexico where they were picked up by a raft, according to the complaint.
Agents were able to identify the driver as Ramos who they had previously encountered on July 17, 2023.
Authorities recovered two feed bags containing about 50 bundles of cocaine weighing at 121 pounds.
The narcotics and Ranger were taken to the Rio Grande City Border Patrol station for processing.
The complaint goes on to state that the fingerprint specialist received nine latent print images from the RGV Evidence Collection Team in Edinburg which were used to match Ramos.
“These findings were documented in a written report and can be supported by expert forensic testimony,” the complaint read.
Ramos was arrested in McAllen on Monday and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis the same day.
He is currently scheduled to reappear for his preliminary examination and detention hearing Tuesday afternoon.
