The show, which airs on Oxygen True Crime, details the story of Lois Ann Riess, who became known as the “Killer Grandma” after she murdered her husband and then killed her doppelgänger in Florida before authorities finally caught up to her at a bar on South Padre Island.
In March 2018, Riess killed her husband, David, inside their Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, home, withdrew thousands of dollars from her husband’s business checking account, and then went on the run. But she didn’t get very far. Police would later discover that Riess spent some of that money at a casino located about 40 miles from her home. As she continued south toward Florida, Riess stopped at another casino in Louisiana. One of her gambling pit stops netted her a $29,000 jackpot, according to Oxygen.
However, Riess’ slide from beloved grandma to cold-blooded criminal had started years earlier. In 2015, Minnesota officials began investigating Riess, who served as the guardian of her disabled adult sister. Riess had been embezzling her sister’s disability benefits and using the money to fund her gambling addiction — something that had spurred fights between her and David.
Meanwhile, David’s body wouldn’t be discovered for a while — not until his business partner called police to say he hadn’t seen David at their wax worm business, which was located next to the Riess family home, in two weeks. Riess had shot him twice, then left his decomposing body in a bathroom inside the home.
Riess ultimately ended up in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where she met a tourist who bore a striking resemblance to her — same blonde hair, same rosy cheeks and warm smile, and nearly the same age as Riess, who then was 56 years old. Her name was Pamela Hutchinson. Riess quickly befriended the 59-year-old before murdering Hutchinson on April 5, 2018, inside her hotel room, stealing her credit cards and her white Acura sedan and fleeing to Texas.
By that point, federal law enforcement was already hunting for her, but the trail had gone cold in Corpus Christi. The nationwide manhunt for Reiss came to an end on April 19, 2018, after an eagle-eyed manager at Dirty Al’s, a restaurant on South Padre Island, recognized her and called police. Within moments, a group of U.S. Marshals and local police closed in as Riess sat sipping a drink at another Island eatery, Sea Ranch. After her arrest, police recovered two handguns and Hutchinson’s Acura.
Riess pleaded guilty to both murders in courts in Florida and Minnesota and is currently serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole. The “Killer Grandma” episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered aired for the first time on Wednesday, February 25, and is available for on-demand streaming on the Oxygen app.
