Just a few months after a beloved South Texas meteorologist signed off the air for the last time, station leaders have announced her successor. The news is part of a wave of recent changes at KRGV, the Rio Grande Valley’s ABC affiliate and highest-rated television news station.
KRGV formally welcomed new meteorologist Jay Martin during the station’s morning and noon newscasts on Tuesday, June 16. Martin comes to the Valley after working stints with AccuWeather and at television news stations in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; San Angelo; and Clarksburg, West Virginia, according to his LinkedIn.
Martin got a thrilling start to forecasting Valley weather by joining his first KRGV broadcasts during a period of severe weather and flooding rains that spawned over the region Monday night into Tuesday morning. Station officials told MySA that they’re excited to “add another experienced meteorologist to our team.”
Previously, Martin worked as a weather producer for AccuWeather and as a meteorologist with Louisiana First News, a Nexstar Media Group-owned company that operates WGMB Fox 44 and WVLA NBC 33 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Prior to that, Martin served as a chief meteorologist at another Nexstar-owned, dual-branded news station, Concho Valley News, which operates KLST News (CBS) and KSAN News (NBC). Concho Valley News covers San Angelo and the greater West-Central Texas region.
Martin joins the KRGV First Warn 5 Weather team a little more than two months after the departure of Cecilia Gutierrez, who worked for the station for a decade.
Most recently, Gutierrez served as the primary meteorologist for the station’s morning newscast, KRGV Channel 5 Morning News, which airs from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday.
“I leave with a heart full of gratitude for my colleagues, our station, and especially for each of you who invited me into your lives over the years,” Gutierrez said in a farewell post on Facebook on Wednesday, June 17.
“Thank you for your encouragement, your prayers, and your loyalty. I will always cherish the memories we’ve made together,” she said in the post.
