PHARR, Texas – Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council held its first meeting since it was officially formed by Hidalgo County Commissioners Court earlier this month.
The 16-member advisory body was established to give young professionals a direct voice in local government and to combat regional brain drain.
The group met for the first time since its inauguration at the Pharr Global Business Hub on Sept. 26. The keynote speaker was Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez.
Before the meeting started, the Rio Grande Guardian secured an exclusive interview with the secretary of the new organization, Lizette Galaviz.
“Today we are having our summit for the Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council. It’s an initiative brought by the county judge, his office and Hidalgo County, to bring a voice to the young professionals,” Galaviz said.
Asked about the group’s purpose, Galaviz said. “The purpose is to bring the voice of young professionals to the table, to make sure that we have an opportunity to grow and stay in Hidalgo County.”
Asked how the idea came about, Galaviz said: “We’ve seen that a lot of young professionals leave the (Rio Grande) Valley to seek other opportunities. But, there are a lot of opportunities here that already exist. And there’s more to come. So we want to make sure that Hidalgo County also grows its youth professionalism.
Asked about the enthusiasm and energy on display at the first official meeting of the group, Galaviz said: “We know that there’s a lot of young and talented people here, so the seeking wasn’t the difficult part. It was choosing who would be best suited for (leadership roles) this inaugural year.”
Asked about Judge Cortez’s role, Galaviz said: “I think it’s wonderful. Judge Cortez has been a champion for youth professionalism, youth leadership, always championing the next generation, the next leaders here in Hidalgo County.”
Galaviz added: “We’re so excited to be here. We’re so excited to be a part of this initiative, and so happy for all the people that have always supported us and continue to support us as we grow into this new role.”

Speaking on social media after the meeting, Judge Cortez said: “Congratulations to the Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council on their inaugural summit. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity for young adults across Hidalgo County to share their perspectives, strengthen their leadership skills, engage in local government, and help shape conversations about the future of our region.”Cortez added: “From civic engagement and regional opportunity to quality of life and retaining the next generation of talent, the Future Leaders Council is creating a space for young voices to be heard and ideas to be shared.”
