RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s and women’s soccer programs showcased a great display of soccer for a crowd of 312 fans as the men’s team hosted a free youth clinic and the women’s team shutout Tec de Monterrey in an exhibition match Saturday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.
The sunny afternoon was full of energy, community, and fun in Brownsville. A free youth clinic hosted by the UTRGV Men’s Soccer program brought 55 children to Sams Memorial Stadium to reach one goal, #RallyTheValley.
The hour-long clinic saw the kids enjoy fun drills and simulated play. High fives and cheers roared around the pitch as the kids faced off in penalty kicks against one another. The clinic was separated in three different groups on the pitch by age and positions. The men’s soccer program wrapped up the community event with a team huddle chant and group picture with kids. The kids enjoyed the competitive spirit that was rooted by leadership from the men’s soccer program.
“It’s all about the youth and the community of Brownsville,” head men’s soccer coach Bryheem Hancock. “Being able to give back and spend a few hours with the community and have a women’s soccer match right after in their back yard is exciting. It’s a great feeling being able to have the kids, who have dreams of playing soccer, get the opportunity to play with players they look up to.
As sunset took place, the women’s soccer team kicked off against Tec de Monterrey. Fueled by the Vaquero faithful in Brownsville, UTRGV wrapped up the night with a successful showing against the Borregos.
“Today was a good day of soccer,” head women’s soccer coach Nataki Stewart said. “Finally had the chance to play someone else, there was good moments from our team and there are things they can still improve on, but we are super excited about our platform.”
UTRGV will continue its international series against Tec de Monterrey as the men’s soccer team will host the Borrgoes Sunday for an exhibition match at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Meanwhile the women’s soccer team will prepare for their season opener Thursday against Texas southern at 6:30pm at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
All matches held at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex are free and open to the public.
