South Texans well know that it’s hot outside for the majority of the year. And even on the best days, the humidity can most accurately be described as “swampy.” But what many may not know is that all those hot and humid days underneath the searing South Texas sun can add up to a lot of stress for your skin.
According to a new ranking by Fresha, an online beauty and wellness marketplace, nearly all of the worst cities in the United States for summertime skin stress are located in deep South Texas. At the top of the list is picturesque Brownsville, the city “on the border, by the sea,” which ranked as not only the worst city in Texas for summer skin stress, but also the worst in the entire nation. Other South Texas cities in the Lone Star State’s top 10 include McAllen, Laredo, Kingsville and Corpus Christi.
“Summer can be especially tough on the skin because it is rarely just one thing causing the problem. UV exposure, heat, humidity and wind can all affect the skin barrier in different ways,” explained Fresha beauty expert Annabelle Taurua.
Fresha analyzed 535 metropolitan areas across the country using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Environmental Protection Agency in order to determine how factors like UV exposure, temperature, humidity, weather and even air pollution impacted them. It’s when those variables ramp up to 11 all at once that our skin is put under the worst stress, and this summer has been no exception. On June 18 and 19, a combination of sunny days, high heat and dew points in excess of 80% caused heat indexes across the entire Rio Grande Valley to make it feel like temperatures were in the 120s, according to KRGV Weather.
“Cities such as Brownsville, Houston and McAllen are not only dealing with high UV levels, but also warm temperatures and humidity. That combination can leave skin feeling oilier, more congested and more reactive than usual,” Taurua said.
On a 100-point scale, the Brownsville-Harlingen metro was the only region in the country to score a full 100 out of 100. It also ranked first in the U.S. overall for average UV index (9.88), average summer temperatures (85.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and high average humidity levels (74.2%). Hot weather leads to more sweat and greasier skin, which can lead to people washing their skin and faces more often. And that can create a feedback loop-like effect of worsening skin stress. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro, which is the third-worst in Texas, scored 90.5 out of 100.
“If your usual products suddenly feel too heavy, or your skin becomes more oily, dry or irritated than normal, that is usually a sign to make small adjustments rather than stripping everything back or using harsh treatments,” Taurua said.
Fresha not only ranked how cities in Texas fared within the Lone Star State, but also where they ranked compared to the rest of the country. Below, find the worst 10 cities in Texas, followed by where they fall compared to the rest of the country. At No. 11, San Antonio narrowly missed a spot among the worst cities in Texas.
