One person died and three others, including a child, were injured in a shooting Wednesday night at a Northern California high school graduation, officials said. No suspects have been identified.

A spokesperson for the Fairfield Police Department said the shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot at Sem Yeto High School’s graduation ceremony, which was being held at Fairfield High School, southwest of Sacramento.

One of the four people shot was an 18-year-old Sem Yeto graduate who was declared dead at the scene, and the other three were receiving treatment at area hospitals, officials said. The three are expected to recover.

Fairfield police said the three people hospitalized included an 11-year-old child and two adults, ages 20 and 25. Police also directly addressed a rumor that the child had died, stressing that the 11-year-old is still recovering at a local hospital.

Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy said the three hospitalized are stable.

Cell phone video captured the moments after the teen had been shot. Witnesses described seeing people take off his cap and gown in an attempt to resuscitate him.

“It looked like they kind of pulled it off to kind of help him, and at the time, I’m not knowing that he’s already deceased… I’m kneeling down and I was praying for him, but then when I turned my head and see this kid and look at his eyes, he was already gone,” Shannon Thomas, who was there to watch her niece graduate, told CBS News Sacramento.

In a statement to CBS News Sacramento, a Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District spokesperson said the shooting happened after the ceremony had ended.

Law enforcment officials respond to the scene of a shooting that happened after Sem Yeto High School’s graduation ceremony, which was held on the Fairfield High School campus in Fairfield, California, on June 3, 2026.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. A suspect description was not available.

Moy said the shooter “will face justice” in a statement Wednesday night, while mourning the students and families affected by the violence.

“My heart is breaking for the students and families involved,” Moy wrote. “I graduated from Fairfield High School and I can’t get my head and heart around this tragedy. I’m shaken to my soul.”

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Fairfield police with the investigation. Detectives are working to identify and interview potential witnesses from the graduation, which drew about 1,000 people.

Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson, whose district includes the city of Fairfield, said her “heart is heavy” after learning about the shooting.

“What should have been a night of celebration for Sem Yeto High School turned into tragedy due to senseless violence. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted,” Wilson continued.

Sem Yeto is a continuation high school and shares a physical campus with Fairfield High. The school district said classes will continue as scheduled through the week.

Fairfield police pushed back on suggestions that the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District had not requested officers for the Sem Yeto graduation ceremony.

In a statement, the department said it has a “memorandum of understanding” with the district to provide officers for events such as graduations and sporting events when requested. Police said an internal review with district administration found that an attempt was made to request officers for the June 3 graduation, but the request was not submitted through established department channels. As a result, police said the department was not aware of the request.

A vigil for the victims of the shooting is expected to be held at Schafer Stadium on June 12.

Fairfield High relocated its graduation ceremonies on Friday to Armijo High School. The ceremonies will still begin at 6 p.m.

Anyone with information on the incident was urged to contact Fairfield police.
