UTRGV Expands Vaqueros Sports Network with Spanish Broadcasts of Home Football Games

A Historic Partnership

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding its athletic programs. On July 22, 2025, UTRGV’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics revealed a new partnership with Latino Media Network (LMN) to broadcast all home football games in Spanish. This initiative aims to serve the diverse community of the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico, allowing fans to engage with the games like never before.

Radio Broadcasts Available

Fans can catch every game live on KYWW 1530 AM Puro Tejano and KGBT-FM 98.5 La Preferida, as part of the expanding Vaqueros Sports Network. Those who prefer digital options can listen online via the Uforia: Radio, Podcast, Music app by searching for KYWW.

Remarkably, UTRGV stands as the lone Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program nationwide that will have Spanish radio broadcasts for all home games. Comparatively, Idaho, another FCS school, currently plans to broadcast only five of its six home games in Spanish.

Commitment to Diversity

Chasse Conque, UTRGV’s Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed enthusiasm for this new venture. “We are excited to expand the Vaqueros Sports Network to include Spanish-language broadcasts of Vaqueros football,” he stated. He also acknowledged Senior Associate Athletic Director Jonah Goldberg for his efforts in developing the sports network, emphasizing the importance of connecting with supporters who prefer sports in Spanish.

This partnership not only addresses the needs of local fans but also extends the university’s reach into northern Mexico, fostering community connections across borders.

A Cultural Experience

KYWW broadcasts at 50,000 watts and features an array of Tejano classics, creating a unique cultural atmosphere for listeners. From timeless artists like Selena and La Mafia to Emilio Navaira, the station has revived the beloved 1530 AM frequency, reflecting pride in local heritage.

Similarly, KGBT-FM 98.5, recognized as "La Preferida," has re-established itself as the leading regional Mexican station in the Valley. With a powerful 100,000 watts signal, it covers a broad area from Edinburg to Roma and deep into northern Mexico, bridging cultural gaps and serving as an authority on music and community matters.

Celebrating Football in Spanish

Vicky Guerrero, the Texas Regional General Manager for Latino Media Network, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership brings college football to Spanish-speaking fans in a way that hasn’t been done before.” She expressed excitement about making history with UTRGV and providing culturally resonant content for the community.

The Spanish-language broadcast will feature a talented crew, led by seasoned sports broadcaster Pedro Leija, known for his deep roots in the Rio Grande Valley media scene. Accompanying him is Nicolás Quintero, a renowned journalist with extensive experience across various media channels. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge to the broadcast, enhancing the experience for fans.

Meet the Team

Pedro Leija brings nearly two decades of sports broadcasting experience, having worked at Univision, where he served as sports director and hosted popular programs. He has covered major sports events worldwide and currently mentors student journalists as a career technical teacher.

Nicolás Quintero, also an award-winning journalist, has reported on significant global events and has been instrumental in providing community engagement in his previous roles. A graduate of UTRGV, he is known for compelling storytelling and dynamic reporting.

Join the Excitement

With the kickoff of the football season approaching, fans are encouraged to tune in and experience the passion of UTRGV football in Spanish. This new broadcasting initiative not only enhances game-day experiences but also symbolizes UTRGV’s commitment to diversity and community engagement.

For those interested in further supporting UTRGV’s radio broadcasts, sponsorship opportunities are available at GoUTRGV.com/RadioSponsor.

By expanding the Vaqueros Sports Network, UTRGV is setting a precedent for inclusivity in collegiate athletics. Be sure to tune in this season and celebrate the cultural significance of football in the Rio Grande Valley!
