Power Restoration Efforts Underway in Rio Grande Valley Following Severe Weather

Overview of the Situation

Residents in the Rio Grande Valley are struggling with power outages following a significant weather event that struck the area on Thursday evening. Crews from Magic Valley Co-op and AEP Texas are currently engaged in extensive efforts to restore electricity to affected areas. As of Friday morning, approximately 3,350 customers remain without power, down from a peak of 30,500 outages reported late Thursday night.

Current Power Outage Status

According to an update from AEP at 9:45 a.m. Friday, restoration efforts are ongoing, with notable reductions in outage numbers. The regions experiencing the most significant disruptions include north Edinburg, with around 720 outages, and the Weslaco area, which is facing approximately 2,200 outages. Additional Impact of the Severe Weather

The historic storm not only caused widespread outages but also resulted in significant damage to infrastructure. Magic Valley Co-op reports over 5,000 customers without power, predominantly in Hidalgo County. Essential power lines, known as feeders, sustained extensive damage, affecting many customers. Residents have been urged to maintain a safe distance from downed power lines, which may still be energized and pose serious risks.

Community Safety Measures

In light of the storm’s aftermath, the city of McAllen has announced closures due to downed wires affecting public safety. Specifically, Sprague Road, located between 10th Street and Bicentennial Boulevard, is currently closed. For further assistance or inquiries, residents are encouraged to reach out to the City of McAllen at 956-681-2000.

To keep informed about road closures in McAllen, view the official road closure map here.

Restoration Efforts Continue

As restoration efforts progress, crews from AEP are not only working on local outages but have also mobilized additional resources from other regions within the AEP Texas territory. Both AEP Texas and Magic Valley Co-op are committed to addressing the issues as quickly and efficiently as possible.

How to Stay Updated

For those affected by the outages, both companies have provided platforms to report power interruptions. You can report outages to AEP Texas here or check for updates from Magic Valley Co-op here.

Conclusion

As recovery operations continue, it is essential for residents to remain cautious and informed during this challenging time. Keeping an eye on social media updates from AEP Texas and Magic Valley Co-op can provide timely information regarding power restoration and safety advisories as the situation develops.

Stay safe, and remember that crews are working diligently to restore power and improve safety in the affected areas.
