Texas A&M Unveils New Nursing Education and Research Building: A Leap Towards Healthcare Advancement in the Rio Grande Valley
Texas A&M University recently inaugurated its cutting-edge Nursing Education and Research Building in McAllen, a significant milestone aimed at enhancing education and healthcare access in the Rio Grande Valley. This expansive 61,000-square-foot facility, located at the Texas A&M Higher Education Center, integrates the efforts of the Texas A&M College of Nursing and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Facilities that Transform Healthcare Education
The newly opened building is designed to foster a dynamic learning environment featuring modern classrooms, study areas, and a clinical simulation center. It also serves as the base for the One Health Hub, demonstrating a commitment to the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The start of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program marks a new chapter for nursing education in the region, welcoming the inaugural cohort of 24 nursing students.

“A Celebration of Collaborative Efforts”
“This day reflects years of cooperative efforts aimed at amplifying the excellence in Texas A&M education, research, and resources,” stated Glenn Hegar, Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. He emphasized the importance of enhancing educational opportunities and maximizing health care access in South Texas, signaling that it is time for Texas A&M’s nursing and veterinary colleges to proactively meet these needs.
A Stronger Workforce for a Growing Demand
With an investment of nearly $50 million, backed by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents, planning for this facility began almost a decade ago, signifying a long-term commitment to nursing education. The College of Nursing anticipates graduating around 100 new nurses annually through a structured four-semester curriculum, addressing the significant nursing shortage projected across Texas.
It is estimated that Texas will face a deficit of over 56,000 registered nurses by 2036, with the Rio Grande Valley specifically expected to experience a shortfall of nearly 6,000 nurses.
Empowering Future Nurses Through Local Support
“Training the next generation of nurses within the Valley means cultivating a workforce equipped to serve these communities effectively,” said Leann Horsley, Dean of the College of Nursing. This program is dedicated to meeting evolving healthcare challenges while also expanding opportunities for research and community service in South Texas.
Bridging Veterinary Medicine and Community Health
Not only does the new facility boast nursing education capabilities, but it also enhances the College of Veterinary Medicine’s outreach. A dedicated 5,000-square-foot space for One Health programming will focus on research related to zoonotic diseases, veterinary public health, and biosecurity. Research initiatives will target critical issues such as African Swine Fever and New World Screwworm, both posing risks to livestock and public health.
Furthermore, the veterinary program will engage with the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team, strengthening its presence in operations such as Operation Border Health, which delivers essential health services to residents, including pets in the Valley.
Continued Growth and Community Investment
Since establishing a presence in McAllen in 2004, Texas A&M has expanded its academic offerings to include ten degree programs at the Higher Education Center, with plans for a research facility by Texas A&M AgriLife Research on the horizon.
Ernest Aliseda, COO of the Higher Education Center, highlighted the long-term investment in educational resources. “Students graduate with a Texas A&M degree, gaining valuable connections within the Aggie Network. Our community partners play a crucial role in preparing emerging leaders for South Texas.”
Conclusion: A Step Towards a Healthier Future
The Texas A&M Nursing Education and Research Building is more than just a structure; it represents a dedicated effort to address the growing healthcare needs of the Rio Grande Valley. Through its state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive educational programs, Texas A&M is poised to make a lasting impact on healthcare and workforce development in the region.
