Celebrating New Nurse Graduates: A Milestone for Healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley

Rio Grande Valley College and DHR Health Unite to Strengthen Healthcare Workforce

On December 18, 2025, a momentous event took place at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, where 11 dedicated individuals celebrated their graduation from the Registered Nurse Apprenticeship Program. This event, co-hosted by Rio Grande Valley College and DHR Health, marks the third cohort of graduates in this impactful program designed to enhance the local healthcare workforce.

A Collaborative Approach to Address Nursing Shortages

The Registered Nurse Apprenticeship Program was established in collaboration with the Texas Board of Nursing and the Texas Workforce Commission. This initiative was developed in response to the escalating nationwide nursing shortage. The program adeptly combines classroom education with practical, hands-on clinical training, allowing students to prepare for their nursing careers in real-time, high-pressure environments.

Hands-On Experience: The Key to Success

Throughout the program, apprentices gained invaluable experience through intensive clinical rotations at DHR Health facilities. "Through this apprenticeship model, graduates gain hands-on clinical experience and transition directly into the workforce," stated Dr. Joel M. Ramos, director of nursing at Rio Grande Valley College. By earning wages while they learn, students can effectively bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills.

Meet the Graduates

The graduates of the third cohort include:

  • Adam Collins
  • Amy Flores
  • Brianna Fuentes
  • Frida Lopez
  • Janine del Castillo
  • Kassandra Ojeda
  • Lauren Callister
  • Marcos Guerrero
  • Miriam Reyna
  • Natasha Porras
  • Sarah Olivarez

This diverse group of individuals has demonstrated dedication and perseverance, essential traits for future nursing professionals.

A Vision for the Future

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, programs such as this one are essential for nurturing new talent. The successful transition of these graduates into the workforce not only enhances the availability of healthcare providers but also strengthens the overall health system in the Rio Grande Valley.

Building a Supportive Environment

The registered nurse apprenticeship program offers graduates more than just practical skills; it instills confidence and the knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of modern healthcare. By fostering this supportive environment, apprentices can step into their roles better prepared, which is crucial for addressing ongoing nursing shortages.

Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead

The graduation ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also symbolized a commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the Rio Grande Valley. Through initiatives like the Registered Nurse Apprenticeship Program, the community can look forward to a future with skilled, job-ready nurses who are equipped to take on the challenges of the healthcare field.

The future of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley is indeed bright, thanks to the collaboration between educational institutions and healthcare providers dedicated to shaping the next generation of nursing professionals.
