Graham Platner’s Controversial Tattoo and U.S. Senate Campaign: A Deep Dive

Introduction

The political landscape in Maine is currently charged as Democrat Graham Platner finds himself at the center of controversy during his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Facing a long-standing incumbent, Republican Susan Collins, Platner’s journey has recently taken an unexpected turn regarding a tattoo he has carried for years. This article explores the implications of his past, the backlash surrounding his tattoo, and the broader context of his political aspirations.

The Tattoo Controversy

In a recent announcement, Graham Platner revealed that he has covered up a tattoo widely recognized as a Nazi symbol. This tattoo, a skull and crossbones, dates back to 2007, when he was in his 20s and serving in the Marine Corps. Platner admitted that he was unaware of the tattoo’s associations until recently.

“It was a night of drinking while I was on leave in Croatia,” Platner recounted. Initially, his campaign indicated that he would have the tattoo completely removed. However, due to limited resources available in rural Maine, he opted instead for a cover-up tattoo.

“I wanted this thing off my body,” Platner stated, explaining his motivations for the change.

Examining the Symbol

The original tattoo bore a resemblance to a symbol linked to Hitler’s paramilitary Schutzstaffel, or SS, an organization responsible for the mass extermination of Jews and other minorities during World War II. While Platner did not disclose what his new tattoo looks like, he promised to share a photo with the Associated Press later that day.

Background of the Candidate

Graham Platner, an oyster farmer, is positioning himself as a progressive alternative to incumbent Senator Susan Collins, who has represented Maine for three decades. The Democratic primary includes notable names, such as two-term Governor Janet Mills, making it a crowded field. Platner’s campaign has been marked by more than just his tattoo; he has also faced scrutiny over past online statements.

Addressing Past Comments

The tattoo controversy coincides with the resurfacing of Platner’s now-deleted comments regarding military sexual assaults, racial stereotypes about gratuity habits, and criticisms aimed at police and rural communities. Under pressure, he has publicly apologized for these statements, explaining they stemmed from struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression after leaving the Army in 2012.

“I don’t look at this as a liability,” Platner explained. “This reflects the lessons I needed to take to get where I am today. And I’m very proud of who I am.”

Political Support and Future Plans

Despite the controversies, Platner remains resolute and has garnered backing from influential figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders, who believes Platner is better positioned than Mills to challenge Collins.

“While some have called for him to resign from the race, Platner is undeterred,” he mentioned during an interview while focusing on his campaign initiatives, including a town hall planned in Ogunquit, Maine.

Conclusion

Graham Platner’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate has taken a whirlwind turn as he navigates the complexities of past choices and present aspirations. While the controversy surrounding his tattoo and comments raises questions about his suitability, his determination and evolving understanding of his past actions make for a compelling narrative. As the primary draws closer, it will be interesting to see how Platner’s campaign evolves against a backdrop of challenging political dynamics.
