UTRGV Vaqueros Dominate New Orleans Privateers with 10-0 Victory

In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team claimed a decisive 10-0 victory over the New Orleans Privateers at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium on Friday. A crowd of 4,017 fans witnessed the exciting matchup that highlighted graduate student Sergio Lopez‘s outstanding performance on the mound.

Sergio Lopez Shines on the Mound

Lopez (1-2) was absolutely dominant throughout the game, culminating in a career-high 13 strikeouts over 7.2 innings while allowing only three hits. He retired the last nine of the ten batters he faced, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. Along with his formidable strikeout count, Lopez gave up only three singles and one walk, demonstrating his control on the mound by facing the minimum three batters in five different innings.

Offense Fires Up

The Vaqueros (6-8, 1-3 SLC) displayed a robust offensive effort, with four players recording multi-hit games. The standout of the day was junior Armani Raygoza, who tied his career high by going 4-for-5, with two home runs and a season-high four RBIs. His first long ball was a two-run shot to dead center in the third inning, extending the Vaqueros’ lead to 3-0. Raygoza’s second home run was a remarkable 406-foot blast to right field, which brought the game to its conclusion.

Junior Rocco Garza Gongora had a standout performance as well, finishing 3-for-5 just a triple short of the cycle, contributing one RBI and scoring three runs. Junior Chayton Fischer and senior Thomas Williams also exhibited strong performances, with Fischer going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Williams finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Breakdown of the Game

The scoring started in the second inning when Fischer recorded a two-out RBI single, putting the Vaqueros ahead 1-0. The team expanded their lead in the fourth inning by capitalizing on wild pitches, scoring two more runs, bringing the score to 5-0.

Raygoza added an RBI single in the fifth inning after a double from Garza Gongora, making it 6-0. Garza Gongora maintained his momentum with a home run into the Privateers’ bullpen in the sixth inning, elevating the score to 7-0.

In the seventh inning, the Vaqueros increased their lead to 9-0 with RBI singles by Fischer and junior Austin Stracener.

Upcoming Games and Promotions

The Vaqueros will continue their series against the New Orleans Privateers on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., featuring a special promotion titled Catch ‘Em All Night. Fans are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Pokémon character, and there will be a costume contest alongside a variety of Pokémon-themed activities throughout the game. Attendees can also enjoy a Victory Vaquero card giveaway and Pokémon battles.
