UTRGV’s Journey Towards Collegiate Football: A New Era in the Rio Grande Valley

In February 2016, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) took a significant step towards expanding its athletic offerings by announcing a comprehensive feasibility study for a collegiate football program. Spearheaded by then-President Guy Bailey and Athletic Director Chris King, this $100,000 initiative aimed to explore the potential for introducing football to the university’s sports portfolio.

The Role of the Feasibility Study

Chaired by renowned college football coach Mack Brown, the feasibility study concluded in August 2017, paving the way for the Vaqueros to potentially embrace a football program. The findings underscored the necessity of aligning the university’s athletic vision with its operational realities, particularly regarding its infrastructures. Out of 16 inherited sports, only four had access to locker rooms, illustrating a critical need for investment in athletic facilities.

Addressing Infrastructure Concerns

Athletic Director Troy Conque emphasized the urgency of upgrading the university’s athletic infrastructure to meet the aspirations of both coaches and student-athletes. “As you sit here thinking, ‘all right, we want our coaches and our student-athletes to compete for Division 1 championships,’ you realize they need a place to change before practice and a space for their equipment,” Conque stated. These shortcomings highlighted the pressing need for immediate investment to address the athletic community’s requirements.

Positive Investment Impact on UTRGV Athletics

The initiative to enhance the athletics infrastructure has already led to positive outcomes in various sports programs at UTRGV. For instance, the Vaqueros baseball team has witnessed a remarkable increase in attendance and victories over the past two seasons. This uptick demonstrates the beneficial ripple effect of improved facilities.

Massive Construction Investment for UTRGV

Currently, the university is in the final phases of a significant construction project, which involves an investment ranging from $180 to $200 million, greatly impacting all 18 of its sports programs. This funding also comes in part from a fee increase of nearly $12 per credit hour, which was approved by the Student Government Association in 2021 to support these much-needed facilities.

Community Support: A Crucial Element

The passion of football enthusiasts has proven instrumental in rallying support for UTRGV’s prospective football program. Local football fans, such as Alex Benavides, have been particularly vocal about their enthusiasm, further stimulating interest in the establishment of a football team. Benavides, a dedicated football fan, expressed how the announcement of the football initiative was transformative for him, noting, "Football is my main sport. I love football.”

Embracing Vaquero Pride

Individuals like Alex and Cindy Benavides embody the burgeoning spirit of Vaquero pride as they actively promote the university’s athletic ambitions. Their commitment is symbolic of a growing community eager to champion UTRGV’s aspirations in collegiate football and beyond.

Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead for UTRGV Football

The plans for a football program at UTRGV signify not just an expansion of sporting opportunities, but a comprehensive improvement of the university’s athletic landscape. With robust investment strategies, enhanced facilities, and community engagement, UTRGV is on the brink of realizing its football dreams, promising an exciting new chapter for student-athletes and fans alike.
