Tropical Storm Bertha will bring a one-and-done round of rain, gusty winds, dangerous rip currents, and minor coastal flooding to portions of South Texas and the Texas Gulf Coast today. The system should move inland and fall apart quickly tonight, leaving a hot and mostly dry weekend across the state.

Texas Storm Chasers and the Texas Weather Roundup are supported by channel sponsor HTeaO. David is keeping cool with an HTeaO Razzler during today’s forecast.

Bertha remains a highly disorganized tropical storm. Its low-level circulation is near the Louisiana coast, while strong northeasterly wind shear has pushed most of the rain and stronger winds well southwest of the center.

Rain will move west into the Middle and Lower Texas Gulf Coast, Coastal Bend, South Texas, and Rio Grande Plains through this afternoon and early evening.

Possible impacts include:

• Periods of rain lasting a few hours
• Localized heavy downpours
• Gusty winds of approximately 25–35 mph
• Isolated damaging wind gusts within stronger storms
• Dangerous rip currents along the Texas Gulf Coast
• Minor coastal flooding, especially in Southeast Texas
• Isolated flash flooding in South Texas and near the coast

A localized band could produce one to three inches of rain, but that represents a reasonable higher-end outcome. Most locations will receive considerably less.

This will not become a prolonged, multi-day rain event. Rain should rapidly decrease tonight, and Bertha’s remaining circulation should dissipate as it moves west.

The Hill Country and northern Edwards Plateau may receive little more than an isolated shower. This does not resemble last week’s catastrophic flooding event, and the additional rainfall should not significantly worsen the flood waves still moving downstream through South Texas.

A few strong thunderstorms could develop across the eastern Texas Panhandle this afternoon and evening as intense heating weakens the atmospheric cap.

Most communities will remain dry, but stronger storms may produce localized damaging winds, frequent lightning, and some hail. Lightning could also ignite grass fires in areas that missed last week’s rainfall.

Isolated stronger storms near the Middle and Lower Texas Gulf Coast may also produce localized damaging wind gusts.

Once Bertha moves inland and dissipates, most of Texas will return to hot and mostly dry weather.

A strong upper-level heat dome will remain over the central and southern United States. Most locations can expect upper-90s or triple-digit temperatures through the weekend and into next week.

Clouds and rain may briefly hold temperatures in the 90s across South Texas, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle today. That relief will not last.

Very warm nights will continue, with lows generally remaining in the middle 70s to middle 80s. The limited overnight cooling increases the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for people without dependable air conditioning.

In this Thursday Texas Weather Roundup:

• Bertha’s disorganized circulation and Texas track
• South Texas and Gulf Coast rain timing
• Gusty winds, rip currents, and coastal flooding
• Why this will not become another widespread flood event
• Panhandle severe-thunderstorm potential
• Today’s flash-flood and severe-weather outlooks
• The seven-day Texas rain forecast
• Triple-digit temperatures through the weekend
• Why the heat may continue into early August

Do not enter flooded roads or approach rough surf. Follow beach flags and instructions from lifeguards along the Texas coast.

If thunder roars, get your keister indoors.

During the heat, drink water regularly, take frequent breaks, and check on people without reliable air conditioning.
