A jury found a 49-year-old Edinburg man guilty of murder in an incident where his co-defendant admitted to wearing a wig when the victim was shot multiple times.
Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez Jr. was found guilty by a jury following a trial for the murder of 36-year-old Jesus Javier Sanchez and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
In addition, Reinaldo Sanchez was found guilty of and received a 12-year sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon which will run concurrent alongside the 25-year sentence.
His co-defendant, Jayson Martinez Gonzalez, was sentenced to nine years in prison for murder as well in August after entering a guilty plea.
The two were indicted in March 2023.
On Dec. 20, 2022, McAllen police responded to a residence located in the 1900 block of Oakland Avenue in regards to an aggravated assault where Jesus Sanchez was shot multiple times and was unresponsive.
Once at the scene, police made contact with Maelene Natalia Rodriguez who said she had been asleep with Jesus Sanchez when she heard gunshots and found him bleeding in the ground and not responding.
She added that she saw a white vehicle leaving the location.
One resident described the perpetrator to police.
“A resident in the area heard three loud pops and observed a light complected skinny male, with light brown hair, black pants and a black jacket walking west bound on Oakland Avenue from where the incident occurred,” the affidavit said.
Detectives later responded to Reinaldo Sanchez’s residence in Alton where they made contact with his girlfriend, Laura Saenz.

She stated that Reinaldo Sanchez was with a male friend earlier that day and described him as looking like a “reptile” due to his face tattoos.
In addition, Saenz said that Reinaldo Sanchez left in a hurry and told her that his name was being thrown in the mix in the incident that happened to Jesus Sanchez.
Police later located Gonzalez who said that he was with Reinaldo Sanchez inside his white Nissan Altima all morning.
The following day, police interviewed Reinaldo Sanchez who said he saw a woman shoot Jesus Sanchez multiple times and even described her appearance.
However, detectives found surveillance camera footage in the area prior to and after the incident and confronted Gonzalez about the images.
“(Gonzalez) provided details about the crime scene that only an individual that was there would know,” the affidavit said. “(Gonzalez) admitted to wearing face makeup and a wig to show the facial features of a woman the day of the incident.”
Gonzalez also admitted that he was the person walking toward Jesus Sanchez’s residence in the footage obtained by police, but added that he saw Reinaldo Sanchez shoot Jesus Sanchez multiple times with a handgun.
When police tried to speak with Reinaldo again, he requested an attorney.
