A new exhibit exploring the prehistoric history of South Texas is making its way to downtown Laredo through a collaboration between the Webb County Heritage Foundation and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
“Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight” will open this summer at the Villa Antigua Border Heritage Museum, 810 Zaragoza St.
An opening reception is scheduled for June 5 from 6-9 p.m. At 7 p.m., members of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Community Historical Archaeology Project (CHAPS) will present a special program and documentary screening at American Legion Post 59, located across the street from the museum.
The exhibit explores the region’s geological and natural history, from mammoths that roamed South Texas during the Ice Age to giant oysters that once inhabited ancient shorelines.
According to organizers, the exhibition examines how both extinct and modern species have shaped the landscape over millions of years through artifacts, fossils and stories collected from across the Rio Grande Valley.
The exhibit is presented in both English and Spanish and was developed by UTRGV’s Community Historical Archaeology Project. It aims to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s prehistoric past and the environmental changes that helped shape South Texas.
