On Tuesday Nov. 8, 2022 New Decade LNG was invited to address the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce at the chamber’s monthly board meeting. A quorum of board members heard Next Decade Senior Vice President David Keane outline progress on the ongoing Rio Grande LNG project at the Port of Brownsville. He further stated that he was present to seek support for a proposed addition to the project aimed at end-to-end carbon capture and storage solutions. Keane was accompanied by Next Decade’s Head of Community Relations, Andrea Figueroa Benton.
Keane disclosed that Rio Grande LNG has major permitting approvals in hand including the ability to mobilize to the site and perform full site preparations. Lump sum turnkey contracts with Bechtel Corporation have been agreed to and initial work is set to begin by the end of 2022. He went on to discuss the growing worldwide demand for LNG, which, he pointed out “was growing exponentially even before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” He stated that New Decade’s commitments to the Rio Grande Valley Community include the production of low carbon intensive LNG products and to “invest significantly in the Rio Grande Valley’s future, becoming part of the community for the long-term.”
With these goals in mind, Keane announced the formation of a Community Advisory Board to provide two-way communications between the community and Rio Grande LNG. Already committed to the board are the Cameron County Judge, the Chief of the Brownsville Fire Department, the Commander of Brownsville Police, the CEO of Valley Medical Center and several other community leaders.
Keane further stated that the goals of the board are to “become aware of any community concerns and address them, to engage with the community and to share what Rio Grande LNG is doing and why.”
