Brandon Chambers Takes the Helm at UTRGV Men’s Basketball

Published: April 3, 2026

Brandon Chambers, the highly respected assistant coach who helped lead McNeese State’s basketball program to impressive heights, has officially been named the head coach for the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s basketball team. Chambers, who has a solid track record under head coach Will Wade, will aim to elevate the UTRGV program within the competitive landscape of the Southland Conference.

Success at McNeese State

During his two seasons with McNeese State, Chambers played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s success. Under his guidance, the Cowboys compiled an outstanding 58-11 record and secured back-to-back Southland Conference championships. Chambers’ experience working alongside Wade and his deep understanding of the winning mentality made him a prime candidate for head coach positions, culminating in his new role at UTRGV.

In a very competitive hiring process, Chambers stood out among numerous candidates, including Vern Hamilton, who previously worked alongside him both at McNeese and North Carolina State University. The coaching duo had even taken on the responsibilities of leading McNeese during Wade’s 10-game suspension, each commanding the team for five games.

Endorsements from Will Wade

Will Wade’s endorsement of Chambers further solidifies his qualifications for his new role. Wade expressed his excitement saying, “He’s very diligent and an extremely hard worker. He will win at UTRGV and continue to help elevate the Southland.” Wade’s confidence in Chambers’ abilities suggests that UTRGV fans can expect a new direction and renewed energy in their basketball program.

A Bright Future for UTRGV Basketball

Chambers takes over a UTRGV men’s basketball program that has shown significant promise. In just their second season in the Southland Conference, UTRGV managed to secure a third-place finish. With strong leadership and a dedicated coaching staff, the program is well-positioned for continued growth.

Chambers expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am incredibly honored and grateful to be named head men’s basketball coach at UTRGV.” His commitment to fostering a championship culture is apparent as he recognized the alignment of vision shared by the university’s administration. President Guy Bailey and Athletic Director Chasse Conque have shown their belief in Chambers’ ability to lead the program to new heights.

Leadership and Coaching Philosophy

Chambers is known for his strategic approach to coaching and his deep commitment to the student-athletes under his guidance. Chasse Conque highlighted, “Brandon brings so many qualities to our program, but what stood out most is his love for his student-athletes and his understanding of the winning formula for success.” This philosophy is expected to resonate within the locker room at UTRGV, fostering both athletic and personal development among players.

Ambitious Goals Ahead

With a robust coaching background, Chambers is now charged with taking UTRGV to the next level. Having overseen McNeese’s formidable defense, he is now set to apply his skills and insights to a promising UTRGV squad. The team already showed its competitiveness in the previous season, narrowly edging McNeese in one matchup while later losing to them in a thrilling three-overtime battle during the Southland tournament’s semifinals.

Chambers replaces Kahil Fennell, who left the program after a two-season record of 35-29. His appointment emphasizes UTRGV’s ambition as they seek to build upon recent successes and aim for championship contention in the coming years.

Part of a Growing Legacy

Brandon Chambers is not alone in moving up the coaching ranks from Wade’s staff. Adam Howard was recently appointed as the head coach at Troy, indicating a trend of Wade’s assistants finding new opportunities within collegiate basketball. Chambers now joins McNeese’s Bill Armstrong in the league of Wade’s former assistants carving out their own narratives in the Southland Conference.

As UTRGV prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Chambers and his ability to drive the program towards achieving sustainable success and possibly claiming more Southland Conference titles in the future.

Conclusion

The hiring of Brandon Chambers as head coach marks a significant step forward for UTRGV men’s basketball. With his extensive coaching experience, dedication to player development, and ambition to build a championship culture, Chambers is poised to lead UTRGV to new heights. As the season approaches, the UTRGV community eagerly anticipates the impact of Chambers’ leadership on their beloved basketball team.
