Discovering the Role of Physician Assistants: Canterbury Elementary School’s "Mini PAs for the Day" Event

Understanding the Physician Assistant Profession

In recent years, the healthcare landscape has evolved, highlighting the crucial role of physician assistants (PAs). These licensed healthcare professionals perform tasks traditionally associated with physicians, such as diagnosing illnesses, prescribing medications, and assisting in surgeries. Their collaborative work with doctors ensures comprehensive and effective patient care, making them integral members of the healthcare team. This past Friday, students from Canterbury Elementary School in Edinburg were introduced to this vital profession in a fun and engaging manner during the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s (UTRGV) "Mini PAs for the Day" event.

Celebrating Physician Assistant Week

This initiative was part of the celebration of Physician Assistant Week. UTRGV PA students organized this event for the third consecutive year, aiming to educate second and fourth graders about the importance and function of PAs in healthcare. The event was crafted to spark interest in the medical profession among young students, showcasing a future filled with possibilities in healthcare.

Hands-On Learning Experience for Students

The excitement was palpable as students donned scrubs and hair nets, stepping into the shoes of future healthcare providers. Dr. Christina Gonzalez, a clinical associate professor at UTRGV and an experienced PA, spearheaded the event. Her inspiration stemmed from her desire to showcase the PA profession to her daughter’s second-grade class. This idea bloomed into a broader initiative, becoming part of the Project Access by the American Academy of Physician Associates, which draws nationwide attention to the PA profession.

Engaging Activities and Interactive Learning

Throughout the day, students participated in various hands-on activities designed to provide insights into the PA role. The UTRGV PA students introduced anatomy dummies, including the Cardionics Student Auscultation Manikin (SAM), which simulates heart and lung sounds. This captivating technology allowed students to physically experience what it’s like to perform medical assessments.

The students eagerly explored various anatomy and medical tools, engaging in laughter and curiosity as they learned. From understanding organ functions to grasping medical terminology, the activities were tailored to educate while ensuring a fun learning environment.

Key Activities and Highlights

  1. Anatomy Exploration: Students learned about human organs using detailed anatomy models, enhancing their understanding of the human body.

  2. Stethoscope Station: Students were thrilled to hear heartbeats and breath sounds through stethoscopes. Lines formed as children eagerly awaited their turn, faces bright with joy when they identified heartbeats.

  3. Hand Hygiene Awareness: A practical demonstration using Glo Germ gel highlighted the importance of handwashing. After applying the gel, student hands were revealed under a black light, demonstrating the visible presence of germs. They then practiced effective handwashing techniques, excitedly observing the transformation.

  4. Creative Outlets: At the end of the day, students created “Get Well” cards intended for local hospitals, promoting kindness and the importance of community care.

Inspiring Future Generations

Jenna Brown, a second-year PA student and a key facilitator of the event, expressed her enthusiasm for guiding young minds toward healthcare careers. She emphasized that exposing students to various possibilities in the medical field helps demystify healthcare.

Ava Giuoco, a 9-year-old participant, shared her excitement about learning how to wash her hands properly and discovering the inner workings of the body. “It was cool to see my hands clean after the gel,” she remarked, demonstrating how impactful interactive learning can be.

The event mirrors a broader goal: to inspire future generations to consider careers in healthcare. As Dr. Gonzalez stated, “Working with kids is so fun because they’re our future.”

Conclusion: Cultivating Interest in Healthcare Careers

The "Mini PAs for the Day" event at Canterbury Elementary not only celebrated Physician Assistant Week but also ignited curiosity and enthusiasm for the medical profession among young students. The unique combination of education and fun ensured that students departed with fresh insights and a growing interest in healthcare.

As the need for skilled healthcare providers continues to grow, initiatives like this play a pivotal role in shaping future medical professionals.
