Winter Weather Forecast for New York City: Snow Returns Before and After Christmas

This week, the New York City area is bracing for a return of snowy weather, with significant snowfall expected around the Christmas holiday. As the festive season approaches, residents should be prepared for winter conditions that could impact travel and outdoor plans.

Winter Weather Advisories in Effect

*Winter weather advisories* are set to take effect from late Monday night through Tuesday afternoon, affecting several areas in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, including major counties like Sullivan, Ulster, Orange, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, and Bergen. The *First Alert Weather Team* has declared a First Alert Weather Day for Tuesday due to the forecasted conditions that are expected to create travel disruptions.

Forecast for Snowfall: Late Monday Into Tuesday

Following a clear and chilly Monday, a minor weather system is projected to bring fresh snowfall late Monday evening into Tuesday morning. With existing cold air in place, we can anticipate snow accumulation prior to a changeover to rain for some areas.

In total, snowfall projections vary across the region, with most areas expecting a coating to 2 inches. Northwestern zones could accumulate between 2-4 inches, while coastal regions are unlikely to see any accumulation.

Impact on Travel Plans During the Holiday Season

The impending storm coincides with a particularly busy holiday travel period, increasing the likelihood of travel delays. However, after the storm moves out, conditions are expected to clear up for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with temperatures hovering in the 40s.

  • Northern New Jersey, Lower Hudson Valley, and Connecticut: 1-2 inches
  • Upper Hudson Valley and Far Northwestern New Jersey: 2-4 inches, with the possibility of higher localized totals

What Lies Ahead: Anticipating More Snow After Christmas

Expect a more significant weather event following Christmas, as the First Alert Weather Team is forecasting another round of snow from Friday night into Saturday. This system could impact the entire region, bringing snow from early evening until mid-afternoon on Saturday.

As it stands, snowfall amounts could reach up to 4 inches in New York City, with even more expected in the northern and western areas. For the latest updates regarding late-week snowfall and all other weather-related information, be sure to stay tuned to CBS News New York.
