Valley View ISD Partners with Daycares: A New Approach to Early Childhood Education

Overview of the Valley View Independent School District Initiative

The Valley View Independent School District (ISD) in the Rio Grande Valley is implementing a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing early childhood education. By collaborating with local daycares, the district not only aims to improve enrollment figures but also seeks to better prepare children for the transition to elementary school.

Expanding Educational Opportunities for Young Learners

The Role of Local Daycares

Local daycare owner Felicitas Bazan, who operates Campanitas Daycare in Las Milpas, has experienced a significant transformation in her educational offerings since the inception of her daycare. Initially, the programs were limited, but the current partnership with Valley View ISD has enabled her to enhance the curriculum.

At Campanitas and four other participating daycares in Pharr and McAllen, children aged three and four are now engaging in structured reading and math classes, alongside lessons in appropriate behavior, all taught by certified educators. This initiative is an extension of Valley View ISD’s Pre-K 3 and 4 programs, helping to lay a strong foundation for these young learners.

Certified Teachers in Action

Each participating daycare benefits from the expertise of two certified pre-K teachers who dedicate two hours a day to work with the students. As interim superintendent Monica Luna explains, “We provide the curriculum and the resources; they provide the instruction in science and social studies.” This collaborative approach not only enriches the educational experience but also contributes to the district’s enrollment numbers, which have experienced a decline in recent years.

Benefits of the Partnership for Students and Families

Increased Enrollment and Funding

The partnership allows Valley View ISD to add the children enrolled in these daycares to their overall student count. This is crucial because increased enrollment translates to more state funding. Superintendent Luna emphasizes the advantages of early education: “We know the kids do so much better when they are having education every single day.”

This initiative not only promotes academic preparedness but also opens doors for future growth. Luna remarked on their plans to add more daycare partnerships in the coming years, highlighting the district’s commitment to boosting enrollment.

Financial Assistance for Parents

Parents also stand to gain significantly from this collaborative effort. Families who meet specific criteria can access free childcare services through the program. One essential requirement is that families must be receiving financial assistance for childcare through the Texas Workforce Commission. This provides vital support to families in the community, easing the financial burden of early childhood education.

Participating Daycare Centers

The initiative currently involves several daycares in the region, including:

  • Colors Daycare Center – 906 Dallas Avenue, McAllen
  • Building My Future Learning Center 2 – 2500 E Dicker Road, Hidalgo
  • Campanitas Day Care, LLC – 8011 Cisne Street, Pharr
  • Little Explorers Education Center – 124 N 1st Street, Hidalgo
  • Magic Kidz Academy – 202 S Veterans Boulevard, Pharr
  • Building My Future Academy – 2000 S McColl Road, McAllen

These centers are key players in the Valley View ISD’s Tot-To-Tassels program, receiving $25,000 for their participation.

Conclusion

The partnership between Valley View ISD and local daycares is a significant step toward enhancing early childhood education in the Rio Grande Valley. By prioritizing comprehensive educational experiences for young children while simultaneously addressing district enrollment challenges, this initiative promises to foster a brighter future for both students and their families.
