Texas A-F Accountability Ratings: Insights from the 2024-2025 Reports

On August 15, 2023, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) unveiled its 2024-2025 A-F accountability ratings, providing a glimpse into the performance of public school systems across the state. After a period marked by lawsuits that delayed previous releases, the latest ratings reveal a mixed bag of results, showcasing both improvements and stagnations among school districts, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley.

Understanding the A-F Accountability System

Established in 2017, the A-F accountability system is designed to furnish stakeholders with essential insights regarding school performance. The metrics focus on three main areas: academic achievement, school progress, and closing performance gaps. Such a comprehensive framework allows parents, educators, and communities to gauge educational quality effectively.

Highlights from Hidalgo County School Districts

Hidalgo County witnessed noteworthy trends, particularly with four school districts achieving an A rating: Sharyland, McAllen, South Texas ISD, and Valley View.

  • Sharyland ISD Superintendent, Elaine Howard, expressed pride in the district’s climb back to an A rating following a B grade the previous year. Howard attributed the success to the concerted efforts of the staff and students, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing educational outcomes.

  • South Texas ISD maintains its position as the top-performing district in the Valley with a consistent score of 94, a grade it has upheld for four consecutive years.

B grades were awarded to Edinburg, PSJA, Weslaco, and Hidalgo, with scores fluctuating slightly over recent years. Notably, Mission CISD made strides, improving from a C to a B rating in the past two years, further emphasizing positive growth trends in the region.

Rising and Falling Star Districts

  • La Villa ISD notably transitioned from a D to a B rating, showcasing remarkable growth and commitment to academic improvement.
  • Conversely, La Joya ISD experienced a decline from a B to a C, prompting discussions about necessary improvements in educational practices.

Donna ISD remains in the C tier but has demonstrated gradual improvement from a score of 73 to 77 this past year. Superintendent Angela Dominguez highlighted the achievement and cited stability within the teaching staff as a key factor in their ongoing growth.

Cameron County’s Accountability Performance

Unlike Hidalgo, Cameron County did not see any districts receive an A rating, but several performed robustly in the B category. Districts like Harlingen, Brownsville, and Los Fresnos are close to achieving A status, with Harlingen notably improving its score from 81 to 86.

  • Harlingen CISD Superintendent Veronica Kortan underscored the significance of collaboration among employees, students, and families in reaching these achievements. The emphasis on personalized learning strategies has been instrumental in fostering student success.

The Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) held steady with an 87 rating, reflecting the collective efforts of their community. Their commitment to a holistic approach ensures that students not only excel academically but also grow in extracurricular and personal development.

Improvements Among Lower-Performing Districts

The La Feria and Point Isabel districts showed notable improvements within the B range, while Santa Rosa ISD uplifted itself from a C to a score of 80.

However, challenges remain for districts like San Benito and Rio Hondo, both of which have fluctuated within the lower C grade range, signaling the need for focused interventions and support.

Conclusion: Moving Forward in Texas Education

The 2024-2025 A-F accountability ratings highlight a landscape of both challenging obstacles and promising victories within Texas public education. While some districts soar high with A ratings, others face uphill battles in their quest for quality education.

For more insights into Texas education and related developments, consider exploring resources such as the Texas Education Agency or umbrella organizations dedicated to improving educational standards across the state.

As these districts strive for excellence, ongoing collaboration among educators, families, and community stakeholders remains pivotal in elevating student outcomes and ensuring a brighter future for all Texas learners.
