Valley School Districts Delay Start Amid Cold Front Alerts

Valley School Districts Delay Start Amid Cold Front Alerts

School Delays and Cancellations Across the Rio Grande Valley

As temperatures are expected to drop this weekend, various school districts in the Rio Grande Valley are adjusting their schedules in anticipation of the cold front. Below is a comprehensive overview of the school delays and cancellations announced for Monday, January 26, 2026. This information will be updated as we receive new details. Horizon Montessori Public Schools

Horizon Montessori Public Schools will delay the start time for all campuses in the Rio Grande Valley. Classes will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, and will remain at this altered start time for Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Vanguard Academy

Vanguard Academy has also announced a similar delay for all their campuses. The first classes of the day will commence at 10 a.m. on January 26, 2026. Buses will run their usual routes, with pickups scheduled between 9:15 a.m. and 9:35 a.m.


Cameron County School Districts

Brownsville ISD

In a proactive move, Brownsville ISD has set different start times for various educational levels. Elementary classes will begin at 10 a.m., middle school classes at 9:40 a.m., and high school classes will start at 10:45 a.m. Morning bus routes will run two hours later than normal.

Harlingen CISD

Harlingen CISD announced a uniform two-hour delay for school start times. This means:

  • Elementary schools will start at 9:40 a.m.
  • Middle schools at 9:55 a.m.
  • High schools at 10:15 a.m.

Bus services will match this delay, but dismissal times will remain unchanged.

Los Fresnos CISD

Los Fresnos CISD will also follow a two-hour delay schedule similar to Harlingen.

  • Elementary schools will start at 9:50 a.m.
  • Middle schools at 10:20 a.m.
  • High schools at 10:30 a.m.

Point Isabel ISD

Point Isabel ISD has provided parents with options, offering either a 2-hour or a 4-hour delay. For parents seeking to ensure warmth and nutrition for their children, campuses will open at 9:00 a.m.

Here are the adjusted start times:

  • Derry Elementary: 11:35 a.m.
  • Garriga Elementary: 11:50 a.m.
  • Port Isabel Junior High: 12:05 p.m.
  • Port Isabel Early College High School: 12:10 p.m.

Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success

The Early Childhood Academy at Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success will have a unique late arrival option, with classes starting at noon on January 26, 2026.

Rio Hondo ISD

Rio Hondo ISD will close all district offices and campuses on January 26, 2026. Classes will restart on January 27, with a delayed start at 10 a.m.


San Benito CISD

San Benito CISD will begin classes at varied times:

  • Elementary: 9 a.m.
  • Middle schools: 9:30 a.m.
  • High schools: 10 a.m.

Students are encouraged to wear warm clothing, as extra layers are permitted.


Hidalgo County School Districts

Donna ISD

Donna ISD will have starting times adjusted:

  • Elementary campuses: 10 a.m.
  • Secondary campuses: 9:30 a.m.

Edcouch-Elsa ISD

Edcouch-Elsa ISD will begin with elementary grades at 9:45 a.m. and secondary at 10:30 a.m.

Hidalgo ISD

With respect to the cold weather, Hidalgo ISD will hold elementary classes starting at 9 a.m. and secondary classes at 9:45 a.m. Breakfast will be served.

La Feria ISD

La Feria ISD has set a new start time of 10 a.m. for all campuses.


Starr County School Districts

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD will adopt a revised schedule with elementary schools starting at 9:30 a.m., middle schools at 10 a.m., and high schools at 10:30 a.m.

Roma ISD

Roma ISD will have classes for elementary students beginning at 9 a.m., middle schools at 9:30 a.m., and high school at 10:30 a.m.


Willacy County

Lasara ISD

Lasara ISD is set to open at 10 a.m. on January 26.

Raymondville ISD

Raymondville ISD announced a 2-hour delay, with classes beginning at 10 a.m.

San Perlita ISD

San Perlita ISD will completely cancel school activities on January 26, resuming on January 27.
