UTRGV Launches First Endowed Chair in Orthopedic Surgery
MCALLEN, Texas – In a significant milestone for the UTRGV School of Medicine, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has established its inaugural endowed chair in orthopedic surgery. This prestigious initiative was announced during a press conference held on Tuesday at the Rio Bank Tower in McAllen, Texas.
Endowed Chair Honoring Notable Figures
The endowed chair shall be known as the Subram G. Krishnan M.D. and Sumant “Butch” Krishnan M.D. Endowed Chair for Orthopedic Surgery. This esteemed recognition honors Drs. Subram and Elizabeth Krishnan, who have a rich history of contributing to the university, including previous endowments like the chair in neurosciences.
At the press event, UTRGV President Guy Bailey expressed gratitude toward the Krishnans, emphasizing how their contributions have significantly shaped the landscape of medical education at UTRGV. He stated, “What this chair does is enable us to recruit the very best physicians and keep them here—the very best orthopedic surgeon. This, in turn, enhances healthcare quality and the caliber of physicians in the Rio Grande Valley.”
Commitment to Orthopedic Education
Dr. Subram Krishnan, a long-time practitioner in orthopedics, shared insights from his 60-year career, emphasizing that around 50 years have been dedicated to serving the Rio Grande Valley community. His deep commitment to education in the medical field extends beyond his practice; he actively engaged in training others in orthopedic skills throughout the years.
“This endowment is a commitment to healing, education, and progress,” Dr. S. Krishnan remarked. He highlighted the transformative power of medical science in restoring lives and providing crucial support beyond just physical ailments.
Inspiring the Next Generation
During the press conference, Dr. Elizabeth Krishnan also addressed the aspiring medical professionals. She urged young doctors to strive for meaningful connections with their patients. “Work for a cause, not for applause,” she advised. Her words emphasized the importance of empathy and genuine care in the practice of medicine.
Future Ambitions for Orthopedic Care
Dr. Butch Krishnan, who is both a recipient of the endowed chair and the donor’s son, reflected on how this initiative would benefit the community. He stated, “With the capacity and growth of the valley, people need this kind of care. They should not have to travel to Dallas, San Antonio, or Houston for orthopedic assistance. My hope is that this chair encourages our medical residents to return to the Valley and ultimately uplift our community.”
A Beacon of Excellence in Patient Care
The establishment of this endowed chair marks a significant leap forward for orthopedic education and healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley. As UTRGV continues to evolve, this chair symbolizes a commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and community empowerment.
