UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros Celebrate Historic Opening Football Season with 80-0 Victory

EDINBURG, TX – In a stunning inaugural performance, the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros marked a spectacular beginning to their football journey by defeating Langston University with a commanding score of 80-0. This victory not only exemplified the Vaqueros’ strength on the field but also set a benchmark for the program’s history.

A Historic Start with a Defensive Touchdown

The game kicked off with high energy as the Vaqueros quickly established dominance. The standout moment of the first quarter came from defensive player Elijah Graham, who etched his name in the record books by scoring the first defensive touchdown in program history. His interception return propelled UTRGV to an early 21-0 lead, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Commanding Lead by Halftime

By halftime, the scoreboard reflected a staggering 52-0 in favor of the Vaqueros. This lead was buoyed by the impressive passing performance from quarterbacks Eddie Lee Marburger and Aidan Jakobsohn, who combined for a total of five touchdown passes. The aerial attack was complemented by Xavyion Noland, who emerged as the star receiver of the game, racking up 151 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Rushing Attack Dominates

The ground game was equally formidable, with the Vaqueros amassing an astounding 517 rushing yards, averaging 13.3 yards per carry. Noteworthy highlights included Djouvensky Schlenbaker‘s electrifying 66-yard touchdown run and Broderick Taylor‘s contribution with a 33-yard scoring run. A remarkable feature of the rushing offense was the involvement of 11 different players, showcasing the depth and versatility of the team’s backfield.

Stifling Defense

On the defensive end, the Vaqueros put on a clinic, forcing three interceptions and limiting Langston to a mere 167 total yards. The Langston quarterback, Aden Hooper, struggled throughout the match, completing just 13 of 32 passes for 109 yards while being intercepted three times. The Vaqueros’ defensive efforts translated into a strong showing that left Langston reeling.

Securing the Shutout

The scoring for UTRGV was capped off early in the fourth quarter by Taylor’s run, solidifying the team’s victory and preserving the shutout. As the clock wound down, the Vaqueros maintained control of the ball, using kneel downs to run the remaining time off the clock.

Looking Ahead

With this emphatic victory, the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros improve to a remarkable 3-0 on the season, setting high expectations for their future games. The team’s historic win will certainly serve as a motivation as they prepare to take on opponents in the upcoming matches.
