Combatting Food Insecurity in the Rio Grande Valley: A Holiday Bowling Tournament

As food insecurity continues to rise in the United States, the Rio Grande Valley is particularly affected. With about 47.4 million Americans experiencing limited or uncertain access to food, the local community faces challenges exacerbated by factors such as economic hardship, poverty, and insufficient access to nutritious options. This holiday season, the American Advertising Federation–Rio Grande Valley (AAF-RGV) is taking action to address this pressing issue through a unique event that combines fun and philanthropy.

A Festive Fundraiser: The "Keep It Ugly" Charity Bowling Tournament

On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, join a spirited gathering at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen for the fourth annual “Keep It Ugly” Charity Bowling Tournament. This event aims to provide tangible support for those in need during the holiday season, with proceeds benefiting the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley and the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, which supplies Christmas gifts to countless children nationwide.

Participate and Make a Difference

Teams of five are encouraged to register for just $300 per team. Businesses and individuals can also engage with sponsorship opportunities to amplify their impact. This charity bowling event invites participants to strike out hunger while enjoying a spirited evening with friends and community members.

Understanding the Urgency: Food Insecurity in the Valley

The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is pivotal in combating food insecurity, aiding approximately 93,000 individuals weekly through over 275 partner agencies across Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties. Unfortunately, recent challenges like a $1.2 million loss in funding have left the Food Bank grappling with empty shelves just as demand skyrockets. With federal assistance being curtailed and more families relying on emergency support, community resources are stretched thin.

Why Your Involvement Matters

Every dollar donated allows the Food Bank to provide up to five meals to families in need. Additionally, it’s crucial to recognize that every dollar lost in SNAP benefits equates to an estimated $1.54 in lost economic activity in the community. As the Director of Major Gifts at the Food Bank emphasizes, "Food insecurity doesn’t take a holiday break," highlighting the importance of community-driven support during this time.

Sponsor a Child: The Angel Tree Program

In conjunction with the bowling tournament, participants are encouraged to register for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. This initiative provides a platform for donors to match with children who require holiday gifts. By bringing a personally selected gift to the tournament, individuals can help ensure that each child experiences the joy of the season.

Event Highlights

  • Event: 4th Annual AAF-RGV “Keep It Ugly” Charity Bowling Tournament

Supporting Local Initiatives

The AAF-RGV is devoted to promoting advertising excellence while giving back to the community. As part of the American Advertising Federation, this regional branch thrives on supporting charitable initiatives that uplift those facing challenges in the vibrant Rio Grande Valley.

The Mission of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley

Founded in 1986, the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley stands as one of Texas’s largest food banks, dedicated to alleviating hunger across its service areas. They distribute millions of pounds of food each year through an extensive network of partners, working tirelessly to ensure that families have access to the necessary nutrition.

Angel Tree Initiatives

The Salvation Army Angel Tree program enriches the lives of children in need by connecting donors with those who require holiday gifts, fostering community spirit and generosity.

Through events like the "Keep It Ugly" Charity Bowling Tournament, the Rio Grande Valley community can unite in addressing serious issues and ensuring that no one has to face food insecurity alone this holiday season. Join the fight to make a difference today!
