South Texas College Unveils New Culinary Kitchen in Weslaco
WESLACO, TEXAS – South Texas College (STC) has recently marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of a state-of-the-art culinary kitchen at its Mid-Valley campus, coinciding perfectly with the start of fall classes. This new facility aims to enhance the culinary arts program while responding to the growing demands of the culinary industry in the region.
A Grand Celebration
The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by STC leadership, board of trustees, and notable dignitaries from Weslaco. This event underscores the college’s commitment to fostering education and job readiness in the rapidly evolving Rio Grande Valley.
STC President Ricardo J. Solis, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of adapting to local workforce needs: “It is critical that the college meets the demands that are taking place here in the Rio Grande Valley. Our goal is to continuously update and reach out to what is needed here in the region.”
Expanding Culinary Opportunities
The new culinary kitchen significantly boosts the program’s capacity to enroll more students and cater to the culinary needs of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Equipped with advanced camera technology, the kitchen will facilitate connections with local school districts and the community through culinary demonstrations and live cooking shows.
Innovative Training Equipment
Culinary Arts instructor Ruben Lemus highlighted the kitchen’s robust features: “The new kitchen is equipped with industry-compliant commercial equipment, which allows students to work with gas stoves, convection ovens, gas grills, and fryers." The addition of multimedia capabilities will also enhance instructional quality, enabling more virtual classes.
Unique Culinary Arts Program
STC’s Culinary Arts program stands out as the only accredited program of its kind south of San Antonio. The program offers multiple certificates and associate degree plans aimed at preparing students for successful careers in the culinary industry. Over the past five years, the program has experienced steady growth in McAllen and has expanded its influence at the Mid-Valley campus over the last three years.
Meeting Industry Demand
“There is a high demand in our industry, and our students are not only meeting that demand—they are doing so with exceptional quality,” said Lemus. The culinary arts field is known for its rigorous requirements and dedication, and the STC program is rising to the challenge, better serving both students and the Lower Valley community.
By investing in new facilities and technologies, South Texas College reinforces its mission to deliver high-quality educational experiences that align with the evolving job market. The culinary arts program stands as a testament to the college’s commitment to fostering growth and innovation within South Texas.
