New Leadership at South Texas College: Marcos Silva’s Commitment to Community and Education

Marcos Silva, Ed.D., has taken on a pivotal role as the new Executive Director of Foundation and External Affairs at South Texas College (STC). With a rich background in education and community service, Silva aims to enhance educational opportunities and support for students in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).

A Journey Through Education

Silva’s career began as a counselor at IDEA Public Schools, where he spent a decade working closely with students and their families. His dedication to educational advancement led him to serve as the Executive Director of RGV Lead, an organization focused on improving regional educational pathways. Silva’s transition to STC marks a full-circle moment; years ago, he was a student at the college, where he earned his undergraduate degree. His journey continued as he obtained a master’s and a doctorate, breaking barriers as a first-generation college student.

The Importance of Higher Education

Understanding the value of higher education, Silva aims to advocate for first-generation students facing unique challenges. "My parents instilled in me the importance of education and the opportunities it can bring," he noted. His commitment to supporting students mirrors his own experiences and aspirations, making him a relatable figure for those he serves.

Vision for South Texas College

In his new position, Silva is set to spearhead fundraising efforts aimed at creating life-changing scholarships for students. He recognizes STC as a cornerstone of the community, stating, "It’s an honor to join an institution filled with talented individuals dedicated to innovation and educational success."

Engaging with the Community

Silva plans to actively engage with local communities and establish meaningful conversations around STC’s successes and innovative strategies. "This is my chance to contribute to STC’s legacy," he emphasized, stressing the importance of connecting with both familiar and new communities to sustain STC’s reputation nationally.

Goals and Strategies

As the Executive Director, one of Silva’s primary objectives is to maintain affordable and accessible education. He intends to build philanthropic and corporate partnerships on multiple levels to raise funds for STC students. "Our mission is to ensure that no student feels alone in their educational journey," he affirmed.

Building Partnerships

Silva’s approach to fundraising includes seeking collaborations that can amplify resources for STC and its students. "We want everyone to be part of our mission to uplift students and help them achieve their educational goals," he said. By cultivating community-based strategies, Silva aims to enhance STC’s visibility and secure additional resources to benefit students and their families.

Support from Leadership

Rodney Rodriguez, Ph.D., Vice President of Institutional Advancement and External Affairs, praised Silva’s capabilities, stating, "He possesses all the qualities needed to oversee the critical work of the STC Foundation." With his extensive background in education and community engagement, Silva is expected to deepen relationships with philanthropic and corporate partners.

Commitment to Student Success

In addition to his responsibilities at STC, Silva serves as a part-time lecturer at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and has been involved in organizing TEDx events. His multifaceted involvement in the community showcases a steadfast commitment to fostering educational success among students.

Conclusion

Marcos Silva’s leadership at South Texas College signifies a strong commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and supporting the community. By focusing on accessible education and engaging partnerships, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of students in the Rio Grande Valley.
